For what it's worth they have updated the graphics piecemeal over the games lifespan

They've likely eeked out as much graphic quality as they can with this engine while keeping "playable" performance levels.
A visual/graphical overhaul will require a new engine, meaning a complete rewrite of the entire game. Not gonna happen. I'm sure they're already exploring options for the sequel, though.
