PC What I learned from the new worldgen

Hello everyone,

I play a relatively easy game, focused on the building, not the combat.

As you can see below, I generated a small world that has every biome. I learned:

  • The largest city is always in the wasteland, with the most high level POIs
  • Cities in the forest have fewest high level POIs
  • The new roads work -- although in this map, I'd like a road from forest to wasteland and from forest to snow
  • The map shows the traders as red squares. There are two in the wasteland.
  • My main base is a Bargain Burrows north of the forest trader
  • I have storage bases in the desert and wasteland.
  • The big POI in the woods near the wasteland is Red Mesa

I've seen people playing Wasteland Only -- for those of you that don't want to advance trader levels -- let me know whether using only one biome breaks trader progression.

In the game that I am playing, I can get trader level points from any trader, but the mission that advances the stage requires a specific biome. I'm currently at level 6 -- looking forward to progressing to level 7 -- day 35

Does the newest in-game world generator allow to create map with a single biome? Because it feels like now it's impossible to set one biome to 100%
According to what people have said here, no.  I haven't tried myself, though.  But it's extremely easy to change your biomes...

  1. Generate your map with RWG.  Do not create a new game with the map yet.
  2. Open your map's folder in the GeneratedWorlds folder.
  3. Open biomes.png in an image editor (even MS Paint works fine for this).
  4. Use the eye dropper tool to select the color of the biome you want to use for the entire map.
  5. Once the correct color is selected, use the fill tool (the paint bucket) to fill in all other biomes with the biome color you want to use.
  6. Save.  (Do not save an alpha channel/transparency if using an app that has that --- MS Paint doesn't, so it's not an issue if you use that).
  7. Create a new game using the map and it will all be that one biome.

Regarding trader progression...

  • Biomes do not relate to trader progression other than that RWG places traders in specific biomes.  Trader progression is tied to the traders and not the biomes.
  • Going up in tiers is not tied to biomes or traders at all, so you won't break it based on your biomes or traders.
  • Open Trade Routes, however, is tied to traders (not biomes).  If you have all traders on your map, you'll have no problems.  Of course, RWG will only put traders in their own biomes now, so if you don't have all biomes, you won't have all traders unless you manually add them or use a third party map generator that doesn't restrict traders by biome.

Even if you have a map with only the forest but all traders are on the map, you'll be able to do all Open Trade Route quests.

Note that in my game using a map generated from Teragon instead of RWG that had traders unrestricted by biomes, I started with Joel in the forest.  He did not give any Open Trade Route quests even though I got up to tier 5 with him.  Now, my expectation would be that I'd have to find Rekt before I could do any Open Trade Route quests because he's the one who should start the series of quests.  However, the next trader I found was Bob and he gave me an Open Trade Route quest as soon as I found him.  Then the trader he sent me to gave me another.   So I'm not really sure why or how that worked.  The original trader wouldn't give quests (as expected), but the others did even though I don't think they should have until I started with Rekt.

If you don't care about the Open Trade Route quests, even though they do give a better reward than the 1500XP they gave in the past, then you can completely ignore the progression issue.
