vehicles.xml Engine/Gear Sound Configuration

I've been creating some custom vehicles and have found some royalty/copyright free sounds I am using for the idle, acceleration and deceleration sounds but it's been difficult to get these configured to sound decent. Is there anybody out there that understands the gear sound attributes in the vehicle.xml file? I'd like to understand this better to make my custom vehicles sound a bit better.

Some issues I run into...

• Silence gaps in between shifting gears
  
• Acceleration sound stopping after about 10-20 seconds then not starting again
  
• No reverse sounds
  
• Idle sound doesn't continue after letting off of the gas
  
• While idling, idle sound stops after a while

I'd be curious to try this out, always interested in mods that make the vehicles more realistic. If you've got a test version I'd love to check it out.
