I found out you can make underground ore visible while in god mode so I turned it on and exlpored
what I found is that many of the veins were not under surface nodes or gravel. in face most were under parts of the map that didnt seep to have anything on them at all.
also I found huge veins of nitrate in places it should be rare
seems the only way to find ore is to dig till you find it and hope its the type you want.
