Storm feedback of a player that has been around since A14

Hey all,

I just want to give my personal feedback and experiences on the storm due too the many different opinions online.
Overall a 7/10 update in my opinion, and i'm glad it arrived, it brought more danger and more reason to travel the map.
Below is just about the storm, not about the new zombies or other updates 2.0 brought.

Pros
- Randomness to gameplay
- Brings nice atmosphere
- I like that it triggers running and feral zombie sense.
Personal experience: A lot of people complained about "having to wait out the storm" but I have a lot of zombies knock on the doors off the poi i'm in.
Only once I was stuck in a poi with nothing to do, nothing to loot and nothing to scrap.
Even a storm in my own POI gave me some time to do some inventory management and check what skill route I should go for.
I think the reactions are this are a gut feeling and not actual experience.
- Variety within biomes apart from the looks is a nice addition

Cons
- 60seconds timer is too short. Did not experience the timer on V2.1 yet, seen the change in the logs.
- Vehicles being unable to steer is breaking the gameplay.
Personal experience: I was on my was to shelter in the desert and because the vehicle almost broke down I had to run.
Then plaque spitter bees had me slowed down and I died because of the distances being to far away
- Storms are not visible in other biomes.
Personal experience: When exploring the snow biome for the snow badge I ran out of smoothies and had to path back through the desert.
However when entering the desert I noticed an ongoing storm there.
Being unable to stay in the already active storm and also being unable to be in the snow biome I was forced to walk from border to border for 5 minutes just to escape timers. This felt unrealistic and weird. In my opinion either storm should not start when no player is in that biome or you should get a short notification beforehand "You sense an upcoming storm in the burned forest"
- The UI indication is really bad. I know a UI overhaul is coming in V3.0 so waiting this one out :)

Personal ideas for the future
- Increase lootbag drops from zombies so storms give more reason to engage with them.
- Change smoothies to pills. This would fit more it the games aesthetic.
- Replace the badges with something realistically, "boy scout badges" are a huge trigger in the community and this could help temper the emotions.
For example: Weave cloak -> Inferno-woven cloak -> Sand-Shielded Cloak -> Blizzard-Proof Cloak -> Rad-Resistant Environmental Suit

I even got AI to advice some lore behind these items:
Tier 1 - "Infused with the essence of scorched lands, this cloak repels intense heat, allowing safe passage through even the most blistering environments."
Tier 2 - "Enhanced with a labyrinthine network of micro-filters and a super-dense outer layer, this cloak now offers sanctuary from both searing heat and abrasive sandstorms."
Tier 3 - "Woven with the resilience of ancient ice, this formidable garment now deflects the bitterest cold and most furious blizzards, making even the harshest frozen wastes navigable."
Tier 4 - "The culmination of survival technology, this advanced suit creates an impenetrable barrier against the most hostile environments, shielding its wearer from the ravages of radiation and every other extreme known to man."

After posting this I asked AI to advice some medicine/tablets/pills to fit the game more as a replacement for smoothies.
It game up with:
Thermo-Regulator Tablets, Particulate Blocker Caps, Cryo-Stimulant Pills, Rad-Cleanser Tablets.

All would fit the game more in my opinion.
Even if you would all call them tablets so it's easier to find them in the menu.
The antibiotics animation can be used for it and you would increase happiness within the community with 100%.

The only thing that can improve biome progression is a whole new system. This is just working trough a checklist of things we already do in the game, just forced to a certain area. Cheap and lazy. That the smoothies make no sense is the smallest of all problems with it. But i wouldn´t mind your idea with the pills.

Give us minibosses instead of that stupid checklist.

I disagree, after 900+ hours in Vanilla I went to mods to have more fun in game play.
Because every vanilla play-through started ending up the same.

Now having to switch locations over the map and having to rebuild bases en set up multiple different bases made my gameplays way more fun and longer.
But this is my experience, I never ran to the wasteland on day 1 anyway, and if you still like to do so, you can always turn it off.
That's the great part of this, it's highly adjustable to each ones liking.
This is also why I don't understand the veterans complaining.

My main problem is with the new content (badges & smoothies) not fitting in with the gameplay.
Gives me Fortnite Slurp vibes.

@iejen What? i just want bosses to earn the biome badge instead of a checklist, same thing just more exciting. I didn´t say remove the progression.

And you don´t have to switch locations because of the new system. And you never had to before. Vehicles exist. No problem to do your horde in a different biome than your home base. Also i can craft better things than i loot. Before and after the update. No matter which biome. The new bookworm perk makes that even easier.

Do you really enjoy working trough a checklist? It´s all things we already do before. It´s a boring annoyance. And yes i could turn it off, but i would rather have a more exciting and challenging way to do it because i like the general idea of biome progression, i just don´t like how they did it.

It's not troubling for me. I see the checklist more as a small tutorial on what you can find in the wild in each biome.

But yeah, always in for mini bosses :P Maybe as a new quest in the next update.
"I heard a rumor about a giant infected nearby"

Tutorials should be optional and not in the way that you have to turn off the whole mechanic, especially if they are that boring. Also a big part of the player base is veterans. We know how to figure out new stuff on our own in this game. This such a wasted opportunity that it nearly hurts.

But... It is toggleable? You can turn it off?

This combination can *really* suck. I was speeding down the highway to a mission in another biome (forest -> snow), and right as I crossed the biome border two things happened: 1. I hit a bump and went airborne, 2. storm gong and 12 second countdown begins. Post jump I land and try to turn around so I can go back to the forest and wait out the storm. Thanks to the jump delaying when I could start turning around, and the lousy steering in the storm, I was down below 50% health by the time I got back to the forest.

That's not entirely on TFP, of course. Was on a KTM (wito's motorcycles) which goes ridiculously fast compared to vehicles in the base game. Still, kinda harsh all around.

No thanks. I really hate minibosses. And that seems just as contrived and gamey as the checklist is. So overall I can't see it as being a meaningful improvement.

@Sapient6 Tbh, i would take anything that is at least a little bit more exciting. Don´t even care anymore if it´s gamey or not. The game is way beyond repair regarding being gamey. Doesn´t really matter anymore.

I understand your problem, but you say "We want" but it's not we. It's you.
And TFP went this way, so we as community can ask for tweaks but they are not completely throwing away 1,5year of work for it.
So we can steer them in making the best version of it and biome progression was never the point of this post. Storms was.

We doomed... we so very doomed. Even the Modernest of Modern day writers wouldn't come up with ice that blocks cold. Oh wait, snow smoothie. Micro-filters for ... abrasive sand? Wth is essence of scorched lands and why would it repel heat? .. I mean, it fits with the current writing of this title, was that part of your prompt? :D

Hahaha, yeah just briefly explained the current biomes and made it suggest a clothing piece that's upgradeable and fitting in the style of the game.

It's not a perfect match in a any means, but it's more of an example of how something more fitting can be put in the current game within changes the intended dynamics of the storms.😅

@iejen Do you really think that the new biome progression system took that long? Really? Nah. They don´t need to get rid of the spitter or frostclaw or anything else besides the checklist, they can even keep the smoothies in if they for example choose to give us a quest instead. And I never said "We want" I said "Give us" once. Which doesn´t imply that everyone is ok with it.

@BFT2020 As already said, give me anything more exciting than what we have now. Anything. Doesn´t matter. Just please less annoying and boring. I want the system, but not like that.

From my perspective, a boss fight would be more annoying and more boring than what we have now. I only mentioned that it would be just as gamey in order to underscore that there's nothing about that idea that I would find to be an improvement over what we've got now.

I think the it's likely also true that my preference for the biome "unlock" mechanic would be "worse" than what we've got now in the perspective of many other players. So what we've got now is likely a pretty solid compromise.
