Splat 3 files

What is the difference from a Splat3 (roads) and the Splat 3 Processed in the generated worlds folder?

I assume that the Splat3 is just basic roadmaps generated in a map creation tool, Like Nitrogen or teragon. Then when the game starts the map for the first time, it processes the splat3 to conform to the terrain, hills and valleys, from the basic 2D splat3 file. This would in turn processes the Splat3 file into the splat3 Processed file in generated worlds folder.

If this is true, then you can edit the splat3 all you want before you start the map and when you start the map all of the edits you made will conform to the terrain.

I say this because I edited a Splat3 file in a game already started and I had to edit the DTM to allow the road to conform to the terrain. I also had grass over every inch of the road as well.

AFAIK, the processed file just adds in the asphalt and concrete from POIs and town tiles to the splat file.  As mentioned, most people manually doing road editing will use MapToolz to get the roads to work correctly with the heightmaps, though I don't do manual editing of them myself and can't give details.

Your 2nd post here is close to my understanding of how the processed file works. I dont know what smoothing or whatever else is applied just by running the map, but the splat files themselves do not change the state the of the terrain under paths, though that could be written to the dtm.processed file, this is above my level, but Im curious to know now lol. Maptoolz can export a dtm.raw with added smoothing under roadways
