I think that Alpha 21 did a great job rebalancing skills/crafting to make other builds and playstyles more viable. However, there is still one old relic that throws the balance between the skill trees off: the Cigar and Nerdy Glasses.
I like the idea of having apparel give you +1 to certain attributes, but the problem is that the Cigar and Nerdy Glasses are best in slot for every build. The cigar gives you +1 Strength and 10% Bartering, and since the cigar is a face apparel, it has no other competitors for that clothing spot. Nerdy Glasses gives you +1 Int., +10 XP Gain, AND -10 Craft Time (basically +10% Craft Speed). Unlike the Cigar, Nerdy Glasses do have other competitors (the other +1 attributes glasses), but the fact that the Nerdy Glasses gives you so many other strong buffs along side the +1 Int., while the competitors do not, means that the Nerdy Glasses are just the best to use, especially for that extra XP Gain which is huge. Therefore, with these items the game still pushes you to build Strength and Int.
Because of this I would like to propose a rework with the goal of fully expanding build creativity and achieving balance.
My Proposition: Instead of making the +1 attribute apparels compete with each other, make them compete with armor. There are 5 armor slots in 7 Days, and there are 5 attributes. Make it so each attribute has a +1 apparel for a specific armor slot. For example, Agility can have the +1 apparel in the boots armor slot. Fortitude can have the +1 apparel in the chest armor slot, etc... Essentially, the player can trade having a piece of armor for that +1 to a given attribute. This even means that you can have players make a Jack of All Trades build where he has +1 to every attribute, at the cost of having no armor. On top of these changes, you might also want to add buffs to the attribute apparels (like the Nerdy Glasses has) so that they can compete better with armor. Just as an example, you can add the +1 Agility to the running shoes which give you buffs to speed and stamina regen (might still need stronger buffs to compete with boot armor).
With these changes you're not forced to build one attribute over another, and it adds a bit of a Risk vs. Reward mechanic to the game. It would make the game much more interesting and fun to mess with builds and playstyles.
Or alternatively The Fun Pimps could add armor/clothes sets into the game that gives you bonuses, which I would be totally on board for since most RPGs have that mechanic.
