PC Question about putting mods into items

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, I tried searching for the answer, but couldn't find the answer. I just started playing 1.0 PC today. I have found a wood splitter mod, and tried to mod my axe with it, but can't seem to find how it's done now. Help?

Left click on the item you want to modify it'll show up on your screen with a menu that will let you  modify, repair, or scrap it. Pick modify.

Then next screen opens up has an empty cosmetic slot or an empty modifier slot. Left click on the wood splitter mod and drag it to the empty modifier slot and release it there. Then click complete. I've just done all this on the pc, if you're on a console, it should be similar.

Another note about weapon/tool/clothing mods in general: Once you go into modding mode as mentioned above, compatible mods will have the 'gear' icon flashing green. If it isn't green, it won't go in. If it is green but still won't go in, it means that you already have a mod installed that cannot be combined with the other. Examples of this are the tempered blade/serrated blade or the shotgun tube extender/sawed-off mods.

In rare cases there are some mods that can stack on each other (though, the only one I can think of at the moment is the drone cargo mod). For the majority of mods, you can only have a single instance of the mod installed on an item.
