Problem with multiplayer

Hey, so i wanted to start playing with my friend, but no matter what we do, he just can't find my game and i don't really know what to do. Maybe i'm just being stupid so if someone could explain to me step by step how to play with someone it would be great.

 
I used my dedicated server continuously during A16 and pretty much could do what i wanted. There were difficulties here and there.

The new A17 setup is driving me mad. I cannot get the server to start. I make sure experimental version is loaded. The config file is different so i know i have the right version of the server. The server will not start.

I got excited earlier - everything was working and then figured out that I was back on A16 after a wipe and reload.

There has to be a simple answer - anyone care to provide some pointers?

are you using allocs scripts and fixes?

have you tried having him connect via steam by right-clicking your name and join game?

Or by inviting him to your game?

I found with mine that i could not connect with direct IP but if i waited for it to show up in the server browser in game it was ok. It might have just been that it took a while for it to be visible in my case. Give it a name that's easy to identify.

 
somehow it started working for me last night. I was able to connect and play. Then, a couple hours ago, a friend tried to join and he could not see the server. There ip was showing my network ip rather than my static ip address. All ports are forwarded as required - havent change anything since A16.

So i did a power cycle. Now, I cannot get the server to start. Nothing has change, It just wont start. Just a little frustrating.

so 2 problems - server appears to not start up randomly and my static ip is not visible.
