If you have the old version they play just fine.

Yes you can but only with the old game version. You can´t play old save files in the new game version.

If you are on PC you can go back to an older game version on steam by right clicking on the game, properties, betas and choose the version you want in the drop down menu.  On console you simply start the old game.
