Number of allowed chars in WorldSeed?

I see the example of 4 letters in the servconfig for Worldseed and those 4 work fine, as so do any alpha numeric combination of any 4 letters and/or numbers but if I even put one more letter or number in the string in the string it crashes really has a problem with more then 4 in that value.

Is the seed really only 4 chars long?

Oh heck no. I've used seeds up to 24 characters before. I don't know offhand what the limit is, but it's definitely not that small.
