If that could be done, it would have been a thing already.
Good news is that after V4.0, it should all be good.

It won't happen. There are too many changes and additions to make that possible. However, it is rare for a minor updates to require a restart even though they always recommend it. Minor updates are things like 2.2 or 2.3. Major updates are when you need a new save, and there are only two of those remaining... 3.0 and 4.0. As long as you keep an eye out for when those are coming, you can easily plan around them so that you are ready to start a new save at that time.

The game is really designed for many new games, unlike most games you might play once, so a new save is not really a big deal. There isn't anything wrong with doing a single really long game, but that isn't the normal way people play this game.
