NEW MAGAZINE TYPE: COMMUNICATIONS (Multiplayer Only)

Multiplayer has too easy of a way to communicate in game. It's just basic text. Voice chat would be better, but proximity voice chat would be the best, with normal chat also working in proximity. Communication in a zombie apocalypse survival game shouldn't be as easy as typing to someone who is across the map. My idea is a new magazine type: Communications. It would introduce 2 new items. The Walkie-Talkie and the Phone, and have a max of 60 books read to max out.

The levels for this magazine type would unlock the walkie talkie first, and the phone second. The walkie levels would unlock at these amounts of books read: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30. The phone would also be in 5's until 60.

The walkie talkie would be short ranged comms, with a higher level walkie talkie giving a bigger radius for picking up someone's signal who also has a walkie talkie. there could be 4 or 8 channels to be on. The radius for each level would be as followed in terms of blocks: 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500.

The phone would be a longer ranged source of communication, starting to unlock at 35 books read. The radius for each level is as followed: 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000, and then 10000 for the legendary phone. Each phone in the world would have a 4 digit code, which would act as a phone number. Entering someone's phone number on a phone would either make it say "Phone number does not exist" or "Phone too far away to contact" but if it does contact that phone, it would of course, ring. Your friend across the map could answer, and now you're having a conversation thousand's of blocks away in a proximity communication game.

Pay phones could even be a thing. Just like a player vending machine, people could pay to use your phone, with pay phones also having levels that unlock as you unlock the normal phone levels. These levels would be displayed on the pay phone, so players know if they are getting scammed by a level 1 payphone.

Here are some things that you people at Fun Pimps could decide: Whether or not the phones run on power, walkie talkie's also having phone numbers, and finding walkie talkies, maybe even phones, in loot so you can communicate a little earlier if you search hard enough.

It doesn't have to be in every multiplayer world, you could make it an optional setting. I really hope you consider this idea and add it into the game. You would be the first popular survival game to do something like this.

Unless I'm mistaken (I use voice of Steam rather than through the game), the in-game voice chat is proximity based.  I don't think you can speak to each other from opposite sides of the map, for example.  I may be wrong about this, but that's what I've heard people say.  Now, what that proximity is, I have no idea.  Probably 1-2km, would be my guess.

Personally, I have zero interest in such a system.  If I am playing the game with people, I want to talk to them even if they are far away.  Otherwise, why play together?  Just my preference, of course.
