pretty much a 4 height box with a wall in front of you made of blocks for the bottom, a pole laid on its side on the top portion of the second row, second set of poles laid on side but on the bottom for the third row, and then a row of blocks

I know it looks dumb this way -_- but its what I used as brawler, I always started the night on top of my "cage" with molotovs to thin the herd a little, as I made them run a gauntlet before getting to me ( elevated corridor with some barbed wire and spikes )

 
Half blocks get you half a block closer.

Redundancy. Whichever two blocks you lose, don't let them compromise your entire setup, have another place to evacuate to. Preferably at least three in chain by d21.
