That is how it is beneath every biome besides the desert. What you should do is dig into the rock using a pickax and dig a tunnel through it until you happen upon a vein of a particular ore: lead, iron, nitrate, coal. Just so you know, if you find a lot of sand in a particular place you should dig it out with a shovel, because there are almost always ore veins attached to deposits of sand. Just be careful to stay out of the way of any falling sand, as sand has a way of collapsing.I've tried mining in the burnt forest but I keep hitting what seems to be a massive layer of solid rock starting about 10 meters down. So far I have only mined in the desert and didn't experience this. Where do I find actual ore in the burnt forest?
Thanks! My brother and I have gotten over 100 days into the game living in the desert and making runs into Burnt Forest/Forest areas just for wood and coal and we are doing extremely well. Mining in the desert gives you a TON of iron. But we are now running low on coal and just chopping down trees and breaking up smoldering bits in the burnt forest isn't keeping up with the need to smelt a crap-ton of iron, so we need to start looking elsewhere. Knowing we just need to keep chipping through the rock is really helpful, and knowing all other biomes are like that is also big. When you open your inventory next time, go to icons at top of page and open the journal. If you look under mining it will give you the biomes and their dominant ores. Thanks! Now if we could just get that ever-promised console update... :smile-new:
It will probably be fixed in future but for now you get more burn time from same amount of wood if you turn it into frames. Some mods require you use nails for frames but I still think the burn time out weighs the nails cost. Same with doors just think they burn 5 Minuteswhy dont you create fuelfrom the unlimited amount of shail you must have from the desert.i just wack 18000 wood in the forge it goes for weeks
Iron ores are actually fairly easy to find. The first hoel i dug in the desert actually lead me straight to one... this was probably pure luck. BUT if you find the sand patches in the forest biome, those lead to ores if you dig straight down. They are usually pretty close to the surface and not hard to find, they are iron ores most of the time but obviously they can be other things like lead and nitrate as wellAlso, the surface “small” boulders are a great source of resources. Not the huge rock formations, but the small groups of boulders. Since you are playing in the desert these small boulders are not as prevelant. Head to a forest biome and they are everywhere. Each boulder will give you stone, iron ore, coal, lead, and nitrate. A quick run knocking out of few patches of these is a quick and easier source of the minerals.
It is not great as finding the iron ore vein, but a lot easier to find.
I think most people underestimate the quantity of minerals that you can gather from the small boulders. This is especially true when you can 1 or 2 hit the boulders (3 or 6 hits to fully mine it). You will stack up on all of the minerals on a short run if you are in a biome where these are clustered together.Iron ores are actually fairly easy to find. That is true. I mine the boulders when i come across them and im not doing anything else, i dont go out of my way to mine them though.I think most people underestimate the quantity of minerals that you can gather from the small boulders. The only downside is this doesn’t lend itself to a nighttime operation like mining underground.
This is how i gain most of my raw iron, lead, coal, nitrate, & of course stone. Like you said, becomes much more efficient when you can 1 or 2 hit them.I think most people underestimate the quantity of minerals that you can gather from the small boulders. Yes, some what the same way. I like exploring, looting and taking the buildings that are in game and fixing them or in some cases rebuilding them. Not much of a free builder. One reason why I don't play minecraft lol I used to play it when chilling with friends but when they changed the spawning system I kinda screwed the traps you could build. I remember almost breaking the game with the zombie spawner I have it set up to get the villagers out of it and stuff but then for whatever reason it more then one player was on the map it didn't want to spawn then they updated where zombie villagers don't even come out of it anymore. So I stopped playing all together lmao. Anyway I am hoping for the paint so I can do like playing PC and make the buildings look more natural when fixing them up. Depending if they remove the hub city or not will depend on if I rebuild it back up with the paint. If they remove 0,0 hub city like PC then still plenty to rebuild just not one big city alone it will just be a town/city combined. Good news if they do this is that no more square towns lolThis is how i gain most of my raw iron, lead, coal, nitrate, & of course stone. Like you said, becomes much more efficient when you can 1 or 2 hit them. I like the coal & nitrate deposits on the ground too. I dont get much into mining. Most of the sand i get is from converting the stone into sand in the cement mixer.
I guess im just more of a looter. I dont get crazy with my builds either. I usually just convert prefabs into a makeshift base.
Yeah I so want paint. And a few more door styles would be nice ....Yeah, people felt the same way on PC until they got it and a lot of people changed their minds. Not only that but they can take a few blocks out that hardly anyone uses and it takes that item out the game to open up for another item then replace that item that was took out with the paint and you still have the look but with a stronger base. Just one example out of many.

Also, very helpful, thanks. Just when I thought I've learned everything I can about this game, more helpful info like this pops up. Thanks guys.I think in the journey notes or whatever it is called in the menu tells you what you need to know but here is a list.
• Iron Ore spawns in all biomes equally. To find it, you need to locate a patch of Gravel and start mining down.
• Lead Ore spawns mainly in the Forest and Pine Forest biomes.
• Coal Ore spawns mainly in the Plains and Snow biomes.
• Potassium Nitrate spawns mainly in the Burnt Forest and Wasteland biomes.
• Oil Shale is found in the Desert biome
Look for black patches on you map in burnt biome. If you go and look around in those areas you should see the fertilizer. It looks the same there as it does when you put it in your fields. The white splotches......hehehehe splotches...funny word.Ive still not tried this yet but where in the burnt forest do you dig up fertilized soil? Is it on the surface, certain patches, or just randomly under the ground a ways?
Thought this was a cool addition when i heard about it, just never have explored it since i dont get too much into farming.
