Learn by doing/surviving for base stats

Bring learn by doing back, but only for base stats (strength, intellect, etc.)

They level up by using the designated weapons/tools/actions (sledge, baton, jumping, mining, healing.)
Could be cheesed, but is a good middle ground for what we have now and what people adored about a16

Give us a million stone axes!!!

I understand that there are people who like to perform the same action hundreds of thousands of times. I also understand that they like to write the same thing thousands of times. But maybe that's enough?

It's an interesting idea. Would it prohibit / replace somebody putting points in base stats?

For instance, if I'm using bows and clubs, STR and AGL will naturally go up. But since I'm not using batons, what will increase my INT? Do I have to use a baton to eventually learn and elevate Physician?

And, if I can spend points to elevate a base stat, why have LBD as a second method of advancement?

I was thinking of a hybrid system
Where the system in place remains, but naturally the use of certain tools will accumulate points in the associated base tree.
Special perks like miner 69er, and physician for example are left as is. Just the base level 10 stats would be affected.

This does not effect the current magazine system. Which should also be modified into a hybrid system.

Not affecting the magazine system and crafting does not boost. Just actions like killing, mobility, and tool use. (Open to ideas like looting boosting base perception over time)

Honestly I understand the validity about having both LBD and current skills being possibly unnecessary. But I argue it would be beneficial over all to have a well done hybrid.

Edit* reading magazines over time could boost intelligence.

To balance this as a hybrid system,
Base stats can return to a 100 point scale or remain as a 10 point.
Over time there can be a secret or visible bar that displays you're natural progress of getting a free skill point.
(Example: 1000 sledge hits = 1 free strength skill point)
This kinda revives learn by doing while keeping the system in place
Balance needed as according

I figured either a toggleable system to choose between a learn by doing or the magazine learner. Alternatively having a hybrid system as has been described could work. Remember that questing and trading is in the intelligence tree too so there’d be experience from that too for intelligence. One problem that would come up is grandpa’s forget elixir but that could just not affect the earned points and only affect the added points from leveling up (how we currently level up).
