I'm still fairly new to 7DTD compared to many of you. I've been playing since A15, and only have like 400hrs in.
I originally came on to the forums to throw crap and flip tables, all over the A17e update. But then I actually took my time and read through many posts on here, I calmed down, and I realized that raging in a forums, is such a stupid thing to do. Now I don't know if my ideas will ever see light of day, or just get buried in the pages of the never ending hate, but at least I'll say my piece. Most will TLDR and add their comments at the bottom.
I've seen both sides of this coin. I'm a gamer at heart, and programmer by profession. I know that nailing down an idea for something in your head is a fantastic idea. And it might be amazing to see your product come to light. Especially when it's been such a long road such as TFP has gone through. But just because it was your fantastic idea at the start, doesn't mean it's going to be a fantastic idea this far down the road. Things have changed, you've built an amazing fan base, and they've built their servers, mods, and groups around it. But you should be leaning more towards what players want rather than this idea you keep saying of "The game we envisioned". You've literally had years of listening to what people want, seeing what works and what doesn't. Then in a final sweep, you threw 90% of it away and built your vision.
I was one of the many waiting for A17e patiently. I played a few times a week for few hours each time. I played with a few groups that were die-hard fans. They would build up games, play for a week or two, then delete it and start fresh. Just for the sake of keeping things fresh. Everyone was excited to see what A17e would bring. Then finally the day comes, everyone installs it, then everyone goes "Meh." Even reading through all the posts, so many people here absolutely love everything that A16 was. There were a lot of things that were broke, and we wanted to see some changes based around it. But for the main part, so many loved the game. So to see A17e just toss so much in the garbage and start fresh, of course people are upset. They saw this amazing thing they love, get discarded by the dev's because it's not "The game they envisioned" and that in itself can be heartbreaking. And now that A17e is here, I've seen many die-hard fans just uninstall it and walk away. Fans that have thousands of hours into this game. We've certainly gotten our money's worth, and it's our right, but still sucks to see people walk away from a game that still has so much potential to stay around. I mean, I've bought probably 6 copies of this game for myself, friends and family. But at this point, I'm not really excited to keep playing it. I used to look forward to A17e, but now that it's here, and it's lost so much potential, it's hard to stay hyped to see it come to "stable" release.
But, regardless, A17e is now here to stay. They've invested too much time and money at this point, and it won't go away. So there's no point just complaining that "everything sucks", which goes no where, try to be constructive. Let TFP know exactly what pieces you love of A17e and what pieces you think need work.
I am a complete casual player. Since I don't have a lot of time to spend playing, most of the 7DTD online games I play, I fall way behind compared to the server date. I talk to people who have whole bases completed by the time I'm getting a forge running. But I'm OK with that. I like to casually walk around and loot buildings. Too many zombies, or too close to night, I'll just continue on and come back later when I'm stronger, have better weapons or get desperate. I slowly think about how I want to build my base, and frequently destroy it (or move to a new area) and build it up again. I'm not usually equipped to handle hoard nights since they happen pretty much every time I log in and only have like 2 hours of game play. But I like the multiplayer part of it. I don't usually team up, but I like to trade, and I like talking to people. So because of this, I accept the punishment.
I always found that A16 was kinda perfectly suited for me. It wasn't too hard at the start, and because I always took my time, was never really too easy as I grew. Maybe I was just not good at the game to find it too easy. But that's fine.
So playing A17e, I immediately found it painful. I'm a casual player. I want to take my time and go loot, gain supplies and slowly rank up at my speed. Instead I was immediately pressed for stamina and health. With every few minutes getting "You are hungry" or "You are thirsty" I walk outside and I'm too warm. Not to mention the never ending onslaught of zombies coming to destroy my temp base because they heard me walk on stairs.
I try to loot, but I have to steadily kill the 10-12 zombies that are in a single building first. I get enough wood, stone and feathers, get a bow going, but it seems that I'm constantly trying to kill the 2-3 zombies that come up behind me while I'm trying to get wood/stone and never actually get a break. I get that a lot of people play this game for the never ending zombies. For the crazy blood moons. For the rush of running around while trying not to die. Frankly, I loved it because it was a great crafting/survival game with a handful of zombies throw in the mix. But now that that's gone, I really don't know how much I'll play. I gave up on playing it online because 1 person would come blazing with a shotgun, draw a whole bunch of zombies by my base and run(or drive) away and they all come after me. I can't deal with more than a few zombies at a time, rather than a hoard. I played a couple single player games, but come hoard night, there's no way I have a base that's ready to take on a hoard that is one I wouldn't normally see till mid-game in A16.
There's some great things in A17e. I love the idea of being encumbered from carrying too much. It makes you think of which stuff do you actually need, and which stuff can you leave behind. I love the new quality system. it makes much more sense. I like the idea of new vehicles, although I probably will never bother since the maps are pretty small, and I wouldn't dedicate the time to it. I like the hot/cold system much better than the old, even though the old one was closer to real life. It was hard to keep dressing/undressing depending on weather, The new one makes that much easier. I love that zombies don't drop loot. I don't think you would ever normally find a hoard of people carrying so much stuff. They would drop it, have it fall out of pockets, etc. And why in the world would so many people be carrying ammo, or sandwiches, or a rocket launcher. None of that made sense, nice to see it go away. I like the idea of weapon mods. Although, as some have pointed out, adding barbed wire, or nails to a weapon should be listed under common sense, not learned. Just like boiling an egg. Maybe instead of knowing it right away, you have to eat a few raw ones, get sick, then you learn it.
All and all, I really prefer A16 over A17e, but that may change with more builds to A17e.
As a casual player, I would have been happier with A16 with no zombie loot drops, a little more balancing to xp/skills, and maybe some large POI to work up to be able to raid to get the higher end gear for mid/late game. Plus a lot more work on fixing glitches/crashes, and maybe some work to the visuals.
That's just my $0.02.
But thank you for all your hard work TFP. You did build an amazing game, that I feel I got my money's worth. Any updates were basically just icing. (Short of adding some form of DLC)
If A17e builds get more to my taste, I might still stick around, but if not, Good Luck on all your adventures in the future.
