It's the end of 2024 - how does this game not backup character saves?

The game crashes and my character is reset fully?  There is no recourse, no backup saves that occur over time?  THERE IS JUST ONE SAVE FILE ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

There are 2 saves (on PC).  But if you reload the game after a crash without copying your backup over your main save, it will be replaced with a new backup.  There is at least one backup manager mod that will help if you're having issues with that, or you can set up something yourself that will copy the saves so you have your own backups.  That said, the backup system does need to be improved even if this is still technically in alpha.

In other words, the game should detect and prompt you before overwriting.  Modding the game to "finish" it for a game is not and should not be a thing for base features.

I just looked at the files.  They are kilobytes in size.  Just have a rolling set of backups - 10 maybe?  Trigger on major things (like every time you level up or respec).  Then you have more saves that take up almost no space (200kb total?) and the player can have a chance to recover when the default method fails.

And what do you mean Alpha?  It's a 1.0+ release.  Weird cope.

You must have been looking in the wrong place. I just checked an old savegame I have and it is 800Mbyte big. And this can grow further the more you change the world.

In general I agree though, for a game that writes continuously to the savegame there should be a much better scheme.

Maybe a setting would be nice how much space the user wants to reserve for past savegames. Then the game only deletes the oldest save when that space is full.

Saves are much larger than that.  There are multiple files used for saving.  In any case, I did say that I agree that saving should be managed better.

Yes, this is 1.x, but it is still alpha.  Just look at the news & announcements area.  You will see the dev diary name of "Version 1.0 (Alpha 22) Dev Diary"  because it is still technically A22.  It's just called 1.2, most likely due to console requirements.  It will not be gold (finished) until their roadmap is completed in a couple of years.  This is why the menu screen still says it's pre-release.
