Items breaking when trying to place them

We are trying to put down some Jack o' Lanterns and we have found a few spots that we can't put them. We put them down and they immediately break. It's like they get placed a short distance above the spot we are trying to place them and they fall, breaking immediately. I can put full blocks in that area and they don't break though. I've stacked blocks up in that area to make sure nothing is interfering but have found nothing. I've noticed this problem happening with crops as well. If I put blocks beside the pumpkins then they will stay but they will break once the blocks are removed. Anyone notice anything like this happening?

I had that happen when I was planting some seeds, thankfully I got the seed back as it fell on the ground, but I thought the farm plot was going to just go to waste, the next day, (and a log in/out), and I tried to plant a seed there again, and it worked, only to happen again on the next row over. Not sure what the issue is, but we are on a game that has been running for at least 2 patches, so there could be a hiccup there too.

probably a height issue, look for the next 3 spaces above the planter to be open air (as for the jackolanterns, make sure it whole block beneath them, half blooks or shapped blocks can cause falling placements)
