PC Is tunneling a viable (multiplayer) tactic in the game?

Hi all. I don't think I'll ever see this employed, as I don't play multiplayer, but I think the pieces are there in the game: is it possible to erode an enemy building by digging the soil from beneath it?

From the wikipedia entry on Tunnel Warfare:

In warfare during the Middle Ages, a "mine" was a tunnel dug to bring down castles and other fortifications. Attackers used this technique when the fortification was not built on solid rock, developing it as a response to stone-built castles that could not be burned like earlier-style wooden forts. A tunnel would be excavated under the outer defenses either to provide access into the fortification or to collapse the walls. These tunnels would normally be supported by temporary wooden props as the digging progressed. Once the excavation was complete, the attackers would collapse the wall or tower being undermined by filling the excavation with combustible material that, when lit, would burn away the props leaving the structure above unsupported and thus liable to collapse. Later, explosives like gunpowder were used for even greater effect.

What do you think?

I find it so incredible that I'm even asking this question in a videogame =)

More like- zombies do it, all the time. And that is why you need to fill in the many holes that will develop around base overtime usually thanks to exploding zombies.

If you build up on a hill, you especially need to be mindful of this. Or if you build an underground mine starting from you base and traveling outward- the screamers will start trying to dig down into your mines and use that to get to you.

What are the countermeasures?
Start on bedrock

People really do it?! That's amazing. What are the countermeasures? Have you taken place in a tunneling operation, either as attacker or defender?
I don't PvP myself but I've seen/heard many things of what others have done.

I've heard people putting in fall traps so people tunneling will suddenly drop down to bedrock if they aren't paying attention.

Another things that stands out in my memory is people laughing about tunneling into someones base and they blew up. Gas barrels were the speculation as to what happened but I'm not sure exactly what.
