Is it possible to have tools of any kind of material (like Minecraft)?

yes, it is possible to have several types of picks, there are already iron and steel, you have to balance the stats of the item(pickaxe)

 
You can make tools out of chili dogs and hobo stew if you like.

If you want to see an example of creating new tools check here. Just search for "Pitch Fork". It is a specialized variant of the vanilla Hoe.

Primarily you have to:

1) Create a new entry in items.xml (minimum)

2) Make a recipes.xml entry to actually be able to craft it.
