Don't feel too bad. I have to use markers just to navigate the open world. Without them I would have trouble finding my base.
I often get turned around in POIs, forgetting where the door I came in is.

It has a tree in the middle that you see sticking out when you enter and it's just a circle down to the bottom and on the way up.
