PC I have yet to even bother with guns in my 4k hours of gameplay...

How far have you gotten into the game, and on what difficulty are you playing? It's possible to kill a radiated cop with a combination of flaming and steel arrows and traps, but a sniper rifle makes it much easier.

I think guns may be more necessary in A17. I prefer the crossbow with steel bolts, and exploding bolts for the irradiated zombies. On later stage hoard nights the AK47 is good for those that get too close. In A17 I might have to use shotguns early on, don't know but we'll see. All depends on what fataal and Gazz do to us.

Let the [competition] commence, hehe... "I only do horde night running on goldenrod tea and throwing rocks at the Zs! AND I KILL AT LEAST 500 every time!"

Anyway, the whole weapons system is likely goin to undergo several more instances of balancing, as soon as they have that mods system figured out and going. ...And don't decide to throw that system out for yet another new system. :D

Agree to some degree that current balance is bull♥♥♥♥ - quick thought on rebalance: Make the silent weapons more about critical, movement disabling hits (dismemberment, stuns) but very low damage and the guns just excel at raw damage output or dps. That would make guns more viable and specifically the first choice for fighting large amounts of Zs during the bloodmoon.

Edit By OzHawkeye: for a more family friendly analogy.

I do occasionally use guns to be sure, but try to avoid their use as much as possible since the Crossbow will work quite nicely for most run of the mill zombies.

I used to enjoy using a Magnum as my 'kill em quick' option in A13.x, but in A16 I never seem to find any more than a single Magnum part. I haven't actually worked towards using guns in ages.

I find the shotgun and sniper to be the only viable guns in the game. Magnum is fun to play around with but not very useful in the long run.

@ the OP, show a vid of your most horrid horde nights, with just your melee weapons without getting overpowered and running away

would be good to watch

Its been a while since I've played vanilla since I've moved on to much harder mods like True Survival and Darkness Falls but when I did play vanilla I played on insane and just the xbow, I think I usually quit around day 35 out of boredom.

Also when I played vanilla I modded the game so I leveled 4x slower than normally.

You limited your game stage to 1/4 of what it should have been and got bored because the game was too easy... Sounds legit.

Playing around with guns is really important in PvP so it becomes essential to work towards them. The line of progression in the PvP servers eventually reaches the "I should probably find more suitable housing than this hole" and that requires weapons.

I don't think you even need guns in PVE if you have a crossbow and decent defenses set up.

To be honest, I think you'll be just fine in A17 without guns if you've played that way for 4K hours. It'll definitely be more challenging, but I think you'll manage.

Now, when bandits come around... yeah. You're probably gonna want some heavy, gunpowder based weaponry.

I use ammo on horde nights but if I'm just exploring I almost exclusively use a sledgehammer

Guns for PvP obviously, usually shotgun with slugs or AK (sometimes a rocket launcher) for close/medium range combat, sniper for long-range combat. Mines and dynamite can make great PvP tools as well.

Also when I played vanilla I modded the game so I leveled 4x slower than normally.
gameStage = playerLevel + playerLevel * (daysSurvived * daysAliveDifficultyBonus + gameDifficultyMultiplier )

so for example

20 + 20(35*0.1+1.5) = 125

5 + 5(35*0.1+1.5) = 30

Meaning he wasn't making the game harder by leveling slower, he was making it easier.

If he goes into a vanilla game without gimping his gameStage, he's probably going to see a major difference in day 35 hordes.

Am I the only one who loves the plain ol' 9mm Beretta? 9mm is the cheapest ammo to make and still gives you decent power beyond your arm's reach. Bows are fun and all, but for serious work, you can't beat a firearm. If the zompocalypse was to happen today, I'd much rather use any of my firearms over something that puts me at more immediate risk by letting a Z get close enough (without a special reason why such as being stealthy, etc.)...

I have never use guns EXCEPT to kill vultures. The blunderbuss is great for that. Typically the only gun I bother with. They cause to much attention, so I stick to crossbows mostly. You can kill a radiated cop in a single head shot when hidden with a nicely leveled up crossbow. In my opinion head shots should be far more powerful than they are currently. IRL practically anyone swinging a baseball bat with a halfway decent form can kill a human with a well placed head shot in a single blow. Zombies should be even easier with that squishy skull of theirs.

I pretty much use 2 weapons: crossbow, or sniper. Crossbow for most things, Sniper for cops/radiated and ferals. The shotgun in 7dtd sucks, the one with the long barrel has way to big of a spread. Wasn't there a vid Madmole did of A17 where he shot the shotgun at near point blank and because its spread is so large he didn't land a single pellet on the zombie?
