I draw a crowd every time I mine lead in the wasteland

Didn't help that this is at night I suppose. Drank a potion and a cup of coffee and the first thing I see was a mutated zombie that's on my kill at sight list. For now.
The fat lady wanted to join the party. But that was it, there was nothing around me.

So I go after the lead and by the time I was finished I looked up and something glowing green was almost at me and there was a soldier with glowing eyes behind him and the stripper and a dire wolf. Of course. While I was checking out my auto shotgun. Really great weapon, I was so lucky to loot that this early. I'm putting more points into the strength line to see how it works. Right now there's only one in shotgun.

Green glowing screamer showed up while I was engaging the dire wolf. they are like peanuts. But the potion had worn out.

Killed em both and some more showed up while I was butchering the direwolf. ■■■■ I was popular. But I had less than a minute left so I let them sniff the exhaust of my mini bike.

I have them walk at night so this isn't quite as heroic as it sounds. It was a lot of fun though.

Mining metal is one of the noisiest things in the game. It attracts a lot of attention. I'm very paranoid about zombies showing up and dropping in the mining hole. I periodically jump out and take a look at around. You could also carry a turret with you. If nothing else they serve as warning systems.

I usually just deal with them when they fall into the mine and go "splat!". ;)

Of course, if my mine has really long tunnels, I might not hear that and might get hit before I know they are there, but that's not a big deal. And it seems like ore veins are much smaller than in the past, so I don't know that I'll have really long tunnels anymore.

The person I play the game with had 4 spitters join him in his shale mine. That might be enough to make me consider some kind of defense if I started to experience that very often. Though just dropping a row or two of spikes around the hole would probably solve that problem easily enough. And as Samcharles said, you can always use turrets as long as you're not too far away from them.
