FPS was destroyed by Steam file fix after crashes, unsure of cause or what to try.

Last couple weeks, I've only been tinkering in the prefab editor, not actually playing.

Had a really nasty crash a few days ago, then the game started crashing frequently afterwards, so first thing I tried was getting Steam to verify the game files. Steam claimed it found one file which was invalid for whatever reason. I let Steam replace the file, but then when I loaded the game up now, I am getting HORRIFIC FPS (unplayable - below 1 FPS, easily) when everything was fine before. Some fix!

So I said to hell with it, just reinstall the game, since that's pretty quick and painless for me (uncapped fiber + SSD). I did and... same problem???

Just to see what would show up, I verified the files again with Steam and lo and behold once again I see "one file failed to validate and will be reacquired"

What the hell do I do here? What's going on???

I remember I actually had a problem like this once before and found a solution, but I have absolutely no memory of what I did or where I saw the answer, and searching for FPS issue just brings up people with crap computers twiddling settings, not anything like my situation.

UPDATE:

Well, I just reinstalled 7D a second time (BTW, I also used the clean function in the launcher before doing these) and now it's running fine. However I DO still get "one file failed to validate and will be reacquired" when I run that in Steam. Noooo idea why.

(Oh, and this has all been with no mods installed at the moment.)

But I mean, it's playing normally again. So that's something.

It seems to always have one file.  Probably a settings file or something that gets changed as soon as you run the game.

Yeah, it does seem to be a very common error based on how many posts there are about it. I wonder if TFP are aware of this?

I don't understand why the first time I "fixed" it ruined my FPS though.

Don't even know if the crashing has stopped yet. Need to play for a while and see.

I can confirm that. It's always one file, looks like it's normal now.

If I have to guess, it could be ".\7DaysToDie_Data\boot.config" - there is this specific value "gfx-enable-gfx-jobs" inside, which it's default gets overwritten by the game, something like this, maybe 👀

Hey Fram, did you add the install folder and save folder in appdata to windows defender/other securities (if you have any) exceptions? Do a folder exception. A reinstall might have forced it to... not scan or whatever, sometimes it behaves weirdly. Also, make sure the application is set to Prefer Maximum Performance, using Nvidia's control panel.
