PC FPS Veterans

I find it strange that every time I kill an enemy in FPS's I instinctively reload my gun by pressing the R key, every single time. I have been playing FPS's since Doom so I guess it makes sense. If you think about it though, after firing 10 round from the 120 on a M60 reloading is a bit dumb and I have to remember to NOT reload my gun by Pressing R or I instinctively do for some reason, and it could be right before another attack and feel like an idiot. Funny this is, sometimes when I use my axe or other melee weapon I hit the R key after another successful battle. Its like it has been burned into my brain after playing so many FPS's.

While having a reload animation for a baseball bat would be hilarious...

I tend to consider it a matter of discipline. If I have time, I reload. If I'm about to pull, I check my main weapons. Yes, I might take one shot with a sniper and reload instantly; but it's not like I need the time for something else right now. Unlike in the next fight. If a gun goes *click*, I failed.

I know it is a good thing to do if you have time, but it is ridiculous that it is without thought for me, in any situation.

I used to think that; but as I came to the conclusion of "it's a waste of brain power to contemplate on the reloading every time", the same answer applies further. It's a waste of brain power to worry about it, it's just a button you press :P

in Helldivers you lose the rest of the rounds in your magazine if you reload...no magic reshuffling of bullets...It took a few days to get used to waiting for an empty clip to hit the button. I actually really like that it forces you to think about your supply....or run out of mags constantly.

Yeah, in a apocalyptic survival game this would be a good feature. As you said, shuffling bullets on your gun should take very long time in a survival game. I reload the M60 in a matter of seconds and I imagine it would possibly be belt fed like a M249 with its 200 rounds that is in a massive case and would take at least 5 minutes to shuffle new bullets.

@ Rooster Gold, exactly. Its is just a habit that comes with almost 30 years of my second favorite genre's. the FPS. Use a couple of bullets and hit that R key every time.
