Drgnkght's No Magazines for A21

I don't care for the magazine skill books so I decided to create a mod to remove them. By the definition of this forum, this mod is considered a Modlet. However it modifies the basic crafting system by reverting the magazine skill system to the previous perk and schematic system. As such is probably almost certainly incompatible with other mods adding craftable items or blocks. And I wouldn't recommend adding it an existing save. (Or removing it from one either.)

Changes:

Removed Skill Magazines.

Added Schematics removed in A21.

Currently the localization is English only.

Just downloaded, Drgnkght: I think this is exactly what I need to get back into A21. I hated that new system from day 0nw, and have been playing A20 ever since it's release.

Thank you sir!

Excellent mod! Ran into a bug though (possibly), got perks in miner 69er and my crafting tier levels of shovels and pick axes are stuck at 1, although fire axes and claw hammers have gone up to tier 5 no problem. I looked through progression.xml and everything looks right, so idk what's wrong.

@thepreston Thanks for the heads-up. I've fixed it.  I found a couple of other items that were broken (steel club and steel spear) while investigating this. I've fixed those also. Shouldn't cause any issues to update an existing game, but make a backup first to be safe.

Existing game opening fine and tools are tier 5 now working good thanks. Can't tell you how much I appreciate not having to deal with magazines.

Any chance for an Alpha 22 version?  Been enjoying Alpha 21 alot more without any artificial progression roadblocks.

Yes, but I don't have an estimate on how long it will take to update. I've been working on it though. I think I'm down to just the armors. They've removed the Light Armor perk so I'll need to replace it as well when I rework the progression on the new armors. Not sure if I should add schematics for the armors or just unlock them with the armor perks. I'm leaning toward no schematics for the armors as RNG would probably result in never getting a complete set unlocked. (And I'm lazy.)

Alrightly, no rush or anything : ).  I was trying to port this over myself mainly to learn more XML but to also assist a bit.  And yeah was feeling the same on no schematics, just keeping the more OPish armors further down trees while having the underwhelming yet still somewhat useful ones earlier up.

@Espio I've updated the mod on my github page. There is a v1.0.5-alpha1 release there if you would like to test it out. (If you do, please let me know if you experience any issues or find an item that can't be unlocked/crafted.)

I've been testing it for a couple days, and it seems solid (I've made it through 10h and 15m without issues). I might need to tweak some of the progression values as I haven't confirmed the TFP didn't change them, and also need to confirm that they haven't added anything that can't be unlocked after removing the magazines.

Currently, I've setup a new placeholder attribute and perk for the primitive armor. It's tied to a hidden buff that assigns progression every two levels until the player reaches level 10. This allows the primitive armor to be crafted and increase crafting level without wasting valuable points. The attribute has zero levels and the perk costs nothing. The buff is needed as the game doesn't seem to allow the player to buy zero cost perks. (This was harder to figure out than seems reasonable. I think the TFPs altered how some of the XML tags work specifically for armor. Or I've been doing it wrong from the beginning and it just worked. 🤷‍♂️)

I created a new light armor perk to replace the old one which was changed by TFPs into medium armor. It works exactly the same as the medium armor perk. I put it in agility as I have no idea where else to put it.

I also changed the Nerd Outfit. Since magazines no longer exist, I changed it's bonus to a +1 to Int. I think that seems reasonable given the intent of the previous bonus. Not sure how balanced that will be once you find an Intellect mod though.

In any case, I appreciate it if you could give it a try. Just be sure to start a new game if you do.

Might've finally ran into something for the rewards related to challenges when turning one into a trader.  Specifically in this case it was the Homesteading and Zombie Slayer rewards though it probably applies to everything related to that window.

Also if Medium armor can fit into Fortitude, that'd be better than keeping it with Light so you don't have access to both under the same attribute.

Here's another error related to challenge rewards from testing in a new world, different log but same result of the UI being broken.

@Espio I removed magazines from the challenge rewards. I think this was the cause of the errors you were seeing.

I also moved Medium armor to the fortitude attribute as I agree that does seem to be the most appropriate attribute for it. Not sure I'm happy about Fortitude at the moment though. It now spans two pages and has more perks than any other attribute. I'll need to think about it some more. 🤔 (This change might cause problems if you have points in that perk already and update to the new version. Could reset progression, maybe. Not sure, I didn't test that.)

I've added a new prerelease v1.0.5.0-alpha3 to the github with those changes.

Should probably just skip that one and download v1.0.5.0-alpha4 instead since it fixes some additional issues.

Hey, I've been enjoying this mod for a while now but I seem to have ran into a bug regarding the steel club unlock. Both the description of the batter up vol. 6 and the steel club say that I must read batter up vol. 6 to unlock the steel club, however I have already read batter up vol. 6 and am still unable to craft the steel club! Do you mind looking into this for me? I am playing on version 1.3 if it helps. Thank you in advance.

I don't mind looking into it. I've taken a moment to skim over the xml and my initial thought was that it should be working. I can spin up a 1.3 save and see what the ConfigDump looks like. Might be something changed in the base game for that perk book. (No. I'm just dumb.) I'll check it this evening.

Thank you very much for the quick response, and kudos to you for making the mod in the first place. I've been having a lot of fun with it recently! Good luck with the bug hunting! 😃

I've found the bug and released an update that should fix it. Make a backup of your save before using, just in case. (Shouldn't be an issue, but no one likes losing their save progression.)

Download v1.0.6.0 and replace your existing mod with that one.
