One thing I used to do when I played 7dtd was have a above ground base on pillars and then a hatch and tunnel underground leading to a mine well away from the main base to put the forge and cement mixer.
I noticed while I was doing this I kept coming up the shaft into the base and a few blocks were destroyed so the zombies beelined to the point where the ground met the shaft going under ground.
I t was quite fun though, while I was in the mine I had forges going and came up and was messing around in the base and I kept hearing something attacking a metal object that was close by so I went around opening doors to see what it was and then I opened the hatch and a entire screamer horde or two piled in from the shaft where they broke through only way I survived was the fact they had to funnel in a small area and I had a good stun baton, mush fun and scared the @%$# out of me when it happened.
But at any rate, did pathing change when you have a block on the ground that can lead to you. Is there a way to go from above ground base to underground area without this happening other than creating a drop where you fall into it, even then I would imagine they just follow you down. Maybe just putting a forge room above ground is the best way now days.
I might just do a offsite above ground room with a small melee horde base to clean up the screamers that seem to constantly spawn even when not doing much.
