Do mods still work the same way?

Hi,

I was just wondering if this new version of the game works the same way as 16 did. Like will my old mods still work on this version or has that all changed now? My buddy told me this is supposed to be a "Mod Friendly" version. Well to me that would mean that all the old mods (I got them from nexus.com) would still work. If not then it's not so "Mod Friendly" to me.

I spent many upon many days getting those mods to work, which I really do not wish to repeat again and I'd probably just give up on the game altogether if I have to go through all that again.

They probably won't.

It would be more accurate to say this is a "modder friendly" version, than mod friendly.

It's not exactly the same, A16 you most likely modded the XML files directly like most people did or used SDX or something like that. A17 You have a mods folder now that you use for most of the modding now. Which to me is better because you are not actually touching the Vanilla files at all. You're using XPATHs and what not in the mods and if there are no graphical changes like new icons/resources etc and you are running say a server, you only need to place the mods on the server and the server will push to the clients. Now if there are new assest/resources/textures/icons etc. then the clients will need to have those files as well in order to see them just like before.

What I like about this method now is you can now if done properly add new mods to your content and take them out as well without really having to re-code the vanilla files of the game. Example like the biggerbacks mods before you needed to have the DLL, now you do not, you just create or add a mod that resizes and edits the windows and UIs etc and it works. That was huge for me. Since then I have added about 30 Modlets as we call them now, and If I don't like one I remove it and move on :)

Now for me I have a little over 6000+ items and blocks that I have to redo and make it Mod friendly, but Its something If there is a game update or anything like that I wont have to keep redoing each time. That's going to take some time for me to do but I like the way the mods have moved to the games now.

At the end of the Day some will like it some will not.

What he said ^^, Modlets, IMHO, are a much better way to do it, because not only can you easily pick and choose the mods you want, but you can stack mods. If you have them load in the right order you can have some mods affect other mods. For instance if you have scrap metal tools and the quality effectiveness modlets and load them in that order, the scrap tools will also get the quality bonuses.

Well that all sounds great and all, but for people like me that don't know what an XPATH is and all the changes to the .xml files, modding is no longer possible for me. But looking at this new game version I can't say there is much to like about it anyways. I think I'll stick with 16.4.
