Dedicated server, linux worth it?

Hello, I wanted to know what version of linux you recommend to host a dedicated server. I am using Win 7 pro 64 bits, with a maximum of 16 players and 64 zombies without lag with a fx 8350, 16gb ram, Ssd. But they told me that with linux it might work even better.
My goal is to put 20 players or 18. Would it be worth it?

I can't say anything about relative performance, but I use debian stable for 2 years now and never had any problem. I know that ubuntu had a problem with finding a steam library a year ago but it seems that was fixed. No news about other distros is probably good news.

Is there really a native linux server out there or is it just running the windows dedicated via Proton?

Every tutorial for installing a dedicated on linux seems to refer to the same apppid 294420.

I've been using Ubuntu for years, though have recently considered switching to Mint or Debian.

I personally recommend using LGSM to manage the server.

As far as performance goes, I've noticed a difference of about 10-15% between Windows and Linux. You get a nice boost. You also get the added ability to use cron for scheduling, and can make live backups.
