Combat and Medical Drones Idea

I was thinking about drones, and they seem a bit forgotten, but they’re still useful. They take up little space in the inventory and alert us to enemies, which is really helpful. Everyone knows how they work with bandages and medkits, which isn’t perfect.

I came up with a rough idea I don’t know if it’s good or not: there could be two types of drones, a combat drone and a medical drone, and the player could choose only one.

Combat drone: detects enemies and warns us about them, just like now. It would have mini guns for different ammo types, but with very limited capacity. Combat mode could be activated with a button, so the drone doesn’t shoot every zombie it sees, only in “hot” situations when we want it to help. It could also have something removed in previous versions a short-range electric shock. This could be included, but with long reload cooldowns to avoid it being overpowered.

Medical drone: could heal other players like it does now, but it could also use any consumable in the game. This wouldn’t be a problem like with medkits. Cooldowns wouldn’t be needed, so it would work well. Vitamins, splints, honey anything could be given to it, and it would heal us. It wouldn’t heal every injury at once; there would be a small cooldown.

Even though using these items manually isn’t really a problem, the drone frees up inventory space and takes care of using them for us, which is convenient.

Going further, there could even be healing priorities for the drone for example, it could treat broken bones first, which are really annoying. A cooldown could apply to medkits and bandages, but I’m not sure how much difference that would make. It would be better to have a button like with the combat drone, where pressing it makes the drone use medkits or bandages on us, which seems simpler and more convenient.

Maybe it’s not the most amazing idea, but I hope that in the future drones will get a second life.

There's some xml for drone weapon mods, but I think they said before they didn't like the idea of it having weapons as it would be OP. I imagine with how it moves around it would be hard for zombies to target it. Though maybe with bandits coming they would reconsider it since there will be more capable threats that could target it easier than zombies.

There's a mod currently that adds a flamethrower mod for the drone. I haven't gotten the chance to use it (no drone yet) but it seems like at least something that's possible.

As for the medical part...who's physician skill would apply?

Good idea but TFP will find 1000 excuses for it!

No, I've only ever used the drone as extra inventory space. It doesn't really "warn" me, it tells me something about enemies being nearby only after I've already killed them. So yeah, to me it's purely an inventory extension, and that's the only purpose I have for it.

Warning about zombies is useful when we’re in the base, we might not hear them (depending on how each person builds their base), but the drone will alert us, and we won’t have to repair our structures later.

A concussion is a more unpleasant injury than a broken arm or leg.
The only time I notice a concussion beyond the initial 2 second effect, which is minor, is when I turn in a quest at a trader while having Daring Adventurer maxed out and only get one reward because the concussion reduced my intellect from 10 to 9, removing max Daring Adventurer. A broken arm isn't a big deal, but a broken leg is the most annoying debuff in the game, imo.

You can definitely hear their footsteps and when they notice you, they make a ton of racket then, as well as banging on walls and such.

Everything is relative. A broken leg isn't such a big deal if you have transportation.

If you do, and you're near it, and you're not trying to do other things like clear a POI, yes. If you are at your base, working on crafting or building or whatever else, a broken leg is also not much of a problem. Of course, neither is a concussion. But if I'm doing something like clearing a POI and I have a choice of either concussion or broken leg, I'll absolutely choose the concussion. Put them into the same context where it matters and, for me, broken leg is worse.

I'd argue it depends on the POI. When I jumped off the roof of a skyscraper and didn't realize I didn't have parkour 5 any more because of a concussion...that kinda sucked.

But yeah, broken leg is super annoying (though I'd argue broken arm is probably worse when clearing a POI. Not being able to power attack because of a broken arm is a real pain.)

I carry steroids for such cases.

On the contrary, I would prefer a fracture. I carry steroids with me, but I usually don’t carry painkillers with me.

I don't carry either unless I find them. Concussion has no impact on me except when turning in a quest reward if I have Daring Adventurer maxed. A second or two of blurry vision? That is not exactly a problem.

I don’t remember it ever being particularly troublesome for me. It’s not a very common critical injury from what I’ve noticed, but since painkillers are fairly rare at 25% loot, it can be deadly if RNG hits at the wrong moment. Usually, though, when I had this injury, I was already at a stage where I had some painkillers. Or rather, it’s not so much that they’re rare I usually manage to find them before getting that injury.

But in 3.0 I’ll probably have to play more carefully, since I’ll likely set found medical supplies to the lowest level. That critical injury will probably end up killing me quite a few times. So I think it’s more of an issue that at 100% loot you don’t really experience this injury much, because painkillers are almost everywhere although even at 25% I didn’t have much trouble with it.

On the other hand, I’ve died many times because of a broken leg. You can always buy a splint from a trader on day one, which definitely helps, but you’re still slower and lose HP when jumping, which makes survival much harder just like with a sprained leg if you don’t have steroids. Sure, I can just wait out those 10 minutes, but depending on the situation I might not have water or food. Waiting even 10 minutes when I’m low on food or worse, low on water means I might not even be able to defend myself due to low and slow stamina regeneration, so I can’t really afford to wait.

But that’s mostly an early-game problem. Of course, any injury can be deadly if you’re unprepared, and every playthrough is different with its own situations.I usually have plenty of meds and carry everything with me just in case: regular bandages for bleeding so I don’t waste the better ones, painkillers, a splint or cast, steroids, a sewing kit, and vitamins.

Version 3.0 is going to be great it’ll be a completely different experience for me. I probably won’t find a bandage on day one and just heal up easily anymore. Medical supplies will be rare, and every injury could be deadly. I’ll have to be much more careful about how I play and what I do. Maybe this injury isn’t much of a problem right now because of how many painkillers there are, but in 3.0 it will definitely be a big problem for me because waiting two hours? That’s not really an option. And instead of relying on bandages, I’ll probably mostly depend on farming to restore HP.

I'll admit, I get frustrated having to carry so many different kinds of medicine that I generally just carry splints/casts and bandages.
I wouldn't bother carrying splints. They are so cheap to make and you find the stuff to make them easily in loot. Save a spot, or even just carry one of the ingredients that you find the least. Then you at least have a chance to stack that ingredient when you find it rather than having a splint that you don't find too often.

Yeah, I didn't used to. And then I got my leg broken by a dire wolf in the snow biome and had to scramble to find materials for a splint so I could actually move/fight. That motivated me to start carrying them.
