Building a lake/swimming pool

Why is this such a pain without creative mode? It's impossible to make anything with depth of more than one block with water in it - any water you put on top from a bucket just joins the single block depth and won't stack. Am I missing something? Or do I really have to get POI water blocks from CM if I want a deeper pool of water?

It does eventually fill in for deeper areas but I find it takes more buckets than you would think so I tend to only do that with smaller areas. Just have to keep pouring.

For larger areas I fill a level at a time. I’ll do one block deep and fill that in. Then I’ll dig a part of it 2 blocks deep. So if it was a rectangular shape I’ll do one row 2 deep and fill that. Then do another row continuing until all is 2 deep. Continue until as deep as you want. Just need to get used to digging underwater.

Since we're discussing about water... can I ask if it's possible to create (sort of) a well with infinite water, by dropping several buckets in a small area?
Something like 2 blocks deep.

Yep. You know that hole in the ground at the Mausoleum? We filled that with water to be our well/bathtub, and, though it took quite a few trips with the buckets, pouring it from a point at the side where the water would tend to both enter the pool and slosh over, actually managed to fill it 2 blocks deep in one area. It looks a bit... er, strange, being all uneven and such. Also, if you're careful, you can pick up the water that sloshed over and use that again. Careful meaning, I think it's random as heck, but I don't understand how it works well enough to actually say. I did wind up digging one more block deep at the back of the hole so you didn't really need to crouch to get 'clean' of stench. Works great.

Considering how much water it takes to fill something, it is basically infinite once filled. :)

Personally, I hate filling stuff with buckets, so if I really want something filled, I just use the Creative Menu and POI water blocks since I can grab them in stacks of 500. Even then, a larger area can require a few stacks to fill. Now, imagine having to do that many bucket runs. No thanks. :D

Well, for now my solution is to build my bases near POIs that have a swimming pool or something like that.
Just today I was building a new base, in the desert, inside the parking lot of some big Motel POI (don't remember the name).

After clearing some of the zeds behind my base, I have a very convenient swimming pool where I can fetch water whenever I like. :sneaky:

what you need to do is find a lake/stream that is higher elevation to you. Dig a hole where you want the water to lay, then carve a trench to the other water supply. once it is filled just plug up the trench and you are good...to....go???? maybe.

That works, though it can be a slow process and can potentially bring your FPS to a crawl if you are moving a lot of water at once. Also, you have to stay there until it finishes because water doesn't flow unless you're there.
