Block degredation over time?

Is it possible to add a property to a block that makes the block degrade over time?

Or is there any other way to downgrade a block?

 
You could take the XML that makes plants grow and instead make the "growth" be a downgraded block. You'll probably want to keep an eye on performance if you do that to a common block though.
