PC biome events

Occasionally in the snow biome there is low visibility and snowfall, this gave me a question of why other biomes done have similar events? So i thought maybe biome events could be an interesting addition: Sand storms in the desert, forest fires that turn forest biomes into burnt forest, etc. a cool thought to share for anyone who mods or devs who think it could be put in vanilla later on.

You will get weather effects in all the biomes (though nothing as cool as a forest fire that creates 'burnt' biome). The system is complex and frankly I don't completely understand it, but in essence there are:

A) Global weather conditions (temperature, clouds, precipitation, wind, fog)

and

B) Biome-specific adjustments and thresholds for each condition

Some biomes appear to not allow certain weather conditions (desert can't have fog, for example, if I'm reading biomes.xml correctly). Cloud cover affects the chance for rain, and all of it - clouds, rain, wind, fog - affects actual temperature. It's...complex.

There are different levels of particle effects - 1-5. You can mod them back in although they will impact your FPS. The effects have been nerfed on A18, but are still very much present. We have bumped up the particle effects for both sand storm and snow storm effects on our map. You can also adjust the temp range of each biome, which we have been nudging bit by bit to get it where we want.

Ti2xGr, you and I are talking about complementary parts of the system, right? So I was looking into how the game decides "is it foggy" and you are talking about "what will it look like if it is foggy", is that right?

For example, "sand storm" is not in biomes.xml as a weather effect, however wind speed is in there and I could see that "it is windy in the desert" (what I was talking about) + "particle effects are turned up" (what you were talking about) = "looks like a sand storm". Am I thinking about it correctly?

Yes, there are two (three?) parts to weather. One is just the "looks" which is the particle effect. There is also temp range, elevation, and humidity or something to that effect. The particle effect can be changed while not actually changing the weather. It just looks worse. We have been adjusting the effects for just temp range and particle effects with just a slight bit more chance for weather systems to occur.
