PC Best Place to Find Paper

I just got auto shotgun unlocked, and as it would figure, I sold most of the shotgun shells for money to buy other things I needed at the moment.

Does anyone know the best source to get paper?

Also while I at it. Another question. Can you repair something behind iron bars like an electric fence behind iron bars.

Certain blocks allow you to do this. Iron bars is not one of them. Do a search for "railing" in the block shapes menu. The one that looks very similar to the iron bars works for this. You can shoot through them, but you can also repair through them.

Here's a video (edit: check out the second video - it's more recent and likely more relevant to 2.0) that shows a number of blocks that will let you do what you want to do. The video is from A20, but it should still be applicable to the current game. There are probably a few newer blocks that aren't listed in this video, but this will get you started at least. About the video, if I'm not mistaken, the "Metal Truss 3D" shape is either no longer in the game, or it no longer allows you to repair through it (which sucks, because I used to really like that block).

Oh, I just noticed in the comments that he has an updated version for 1.0 (which should probably be more aligned with any changes that are also present in 2.0):

The Bars -shapes block all melee, which is where repairs and looting are targeted; so, no. Closest usable thing is a "railing" -shape, same block, just square bars. Blocks melee only partially, I think it passes ranged entirely - that's where cop spit lives, so I don't see the point. Best shape is prolly the scaffolding ladder, blocks melee and spit partially, but allows for both in the middle. Do note that it's a ladder, zeds can climb it in surprising ways ;) Or a good alternative is just a hatch; couple extra clicks, but complete ranged cover.

For paper, can't say I've needed to craft ammo for a long while .. recycled cardboard piles are a good source, but kinda rare, mostly in thematic junkyards and HW-store back rooms. Each trash bag may give a couple if you break them (before taking the loot, but after opening it to generate the loot... <3 silly mechanics)

Certain (smaller) zombies can crawl through scaffolding ladders now, which makes them less than ideal.

As for paper...the only place that comes immediately to mind is the basement of the Crack-A-Book HQ.

Hmm; worked fine for my 2.2 horde base. Nothing honestly crawled through, a couple got glitched through.. but I was running the aoe repulsor + an eFence in a stairwell, so nothing really would've gotten to me even without the Scaffs. I dunno, might be a thing, but seems more glitchy than intentional to me .. :)

I often find plenty of paper in toilets and mailboxes. So much so in toilets that I found myself saying, "Stupid paper again".

You sold your shotgun shells? Ammo would be the last thing I would sell for dukes. There are so many other things you can sell.

Admittedly, I had the scaffolding ladders horizontal, so that the zombies couldn't climb them, but zombies like Arlene were doing the crouch animation and then coming through them. I've seen people mention it on youtube videos as well. Not sure if they can climb through if you have them placed vertically.

The scaffolding is only climbable on one side, so as long as you keep the climbable side on your side you'll be fine. I haven't seen any zombie be able to pass through them, but maybe its because you had them horizontal?

You can also use ladders.

Paper can be found in the same containers as magazines and books, and a lot of it can also be found in toilets. But if you need a lot of it, it is easier to make it in a chemical laboratory. True, in this case you will need a lot of water, but 10-20 water collectors with modifications will solve this problem.

Thanks for replies guys.

I think I will make a hatch in a hollow point of walls surrounding the fence posts of the electric fences and just climb down to repair or whatever. I will need 2 rows of block to keep the zombies from trying to find a better route to me. Or I might forget the hatch and put in a block. It may be a bummer to break a block with my pick. I just do not want the zombies thinking there is an easier way to get to me.

I really thought you could access things through iron bars, but I guess not.

Yeah I got sick of so much paper in toilets, must have been a lot of guys Pre- apocalypse that did not flush toilets.

I sold the shotgun shells for 9mm and 7.62. Which was dumb I know. I had a pipe shotgun for a while and it really sucked. It took forever to reload and the damage was not that great either.

As far as anything 2.0 and above, I will never play. I am on 1.4 and it is not that bad, and is still playable. like most people I love the sandbox of the game, and base defense as well. To get rid of these things just makes a usual FPS/RPG linear game, which is not why I have 2000 hours of time in the game. I do not have anything close to 2000 hours in any other game.

The best thing to do is to look for pallets of paper. The Shotgun Messiah Close Encounters Gun Range has an entrance hall where you can find three of these pallets, each containing 25 rolls of paper. I would have to check, but I remember seeing many of the paper pallets at the Eco Recycling Center.

However, the best place, but also the one with the most zombies, is the basement of Crack a Book HQ. The paper rolls are the best source of paper.

there use to be a paper mill poi. I haven't seen it for a while so not sure if it was removed. I use to find tons of paper there. When you first enter there were some machines with that had huge paper rolls on them and there were more stack up around on the floor.

The POI still exists, but it is no longer a paper mill. It is now called P&B Machining Co.

Frankly, if a player is looting they are swimming in high quality ammo in 2.x (AP, HP, Slugs).

My issue? It was hard to loot enough basic shotgun shells and 9mm ammo to run turrets. I had to craft shotgun shells to run a single bird turret. So instead of selling the basic shells (quite rare) and leaving paper behind I tend to keep them now.

Also while I at it. Another question. Can you repair something behind iron bars like an electric fence behind iron bars.

Many have already suggested the best paper options; recycled paper blocks, P&B Machining Co., and anywhere you find books. If you are crafting stacks the paper goes further than you think.

Others have provided good references and options for this.

If a player is not running a strength/shotgun build why keep them?

The game is pretty easy to mainline melee weapons so as above, if a player is looting they are swimming in high quality ammo in 2.x (AP, HP, Slugs).

Ammo accumulation (and crafting) is rarely a critical issue, unless of course the "bullet hose" is the players chosen play style.

Btw, you can also craft paper; didn't check in-game, but the recipes.xml looks like you can make 10 paper per glue in either the chem station or a campfire. The only difference is that the campfire recipe takes 2 wood per paper, chem station just 1. (Plus fuel of course).

XML:
<recipe name="resourcePaper" count="10" craft_area="campfire" craft_tool="toolBeaker">
    <ingredient name="resourceWood" count="20"/>
    <ingredient name="resourceGlue" count="1"/>
    <ingredient name="drinkJarBoiledWater" count="1"/>
</recipe>

<recipe name="resourcePaper" count="10" craft_area="chemistryStation" tags="chemStationCrafting">
    <ingredient name="resourceWood" count="10"/>
    <ingredient name="resourceGlue" count="1"/>
    <ingredient name="drinkJarBoiledWater" count="1"/>
</recipe>

Yeah, but then you have to have it on the other side of the block, which always annoys me. I know it's weird, but I like my fighting position to be at the front of the block, not the back.

Well, there's always the combo of bars/railings at the bottom (to shoot doggos) with double poles on the top (to melee faces). Scaffs just basically work a tiny bit better. You can have the climbing side toward the zeds if you like, they will just climb it. Makes them behave a little different, but the position won't fail because of that. Just add a "roof" on their side to avoid them getting over, and don't make it unreasonably tall (so you can still hit them).

Oh, I always put a roof on. I generally use (broken) balustrades on the bottom and the top, and I used to use single poles in the middle. Obviously 2.0 has made single poles unviable, so I was just trying out new blocks. I could push back my walls a bit so I could run an electric fence though the block that the ladders are in the "back" of. Will have to try that out the next time I'm building a base.

I think I am going to have steel hatches in front of the posts. I will open the hatch to repair a post or put another in. When triggered on I will close the hatch. They will be on the bottom and with an electric fence wire coming out and the hip points of the steel hatches I should be OK. I will need 24 hatches, but I should have the resources to craft them soon.

Also I know these paper pallets and they are usually in small warehouse's I have found a couple already but I already looted them. I just checked the recipe for the paper and this will help as well when I have my 2 chemistry stations, four dew collectors and 4 campfires going.

Thanks again for the help guys.
