Armor, the missed opportunity

I don't think I have seen others talking about this as much, other than myself, so I wanted to see what others thoughts are on the 1.0 and beyond armor system. Personally I think it was a missed opportunity. Now this isn't meant to petition change as I don't think it is overall a big deal, but I was curious what others thought.

The previous clothing and armor system looked very strange with mismatched outfits, colors and texture protrusions, from each outfit not fitting together, making outfits look pretty rough around the edges. The new armor models brought into the limelight initially met with mixed reactions with me personally not liking the now marauder set, but generally they were neat and I looked forward to them.

Fast forward and the armor sets went from simply providing armor to providing bonuses that seem odd. While not ideal, it would be fine if the bonuses made sense such as reduced damage or reflected damage based on the style and type of armor. We get some of that, but we also get things like increased wood from harvesting, items costing less, increased damage from magnums, motorcycles using less fuel, etc. To put it bluntly it just doesn't make a lot of sense without mental gymnastics trying to explain why 2+2=banana.

Ideally, for me anyway, I would have preferred if armor gave just that - armor, like we had in the old system but with a nice aesthetic glow up. Another, less ideal but tolerable, option is things like reducing lockpicking time and break chance on some nice gloves. Ok, I can understand how that might be possible. Sneaking is more effective. Again I can understand the logic progression made to get there. But I would prefer the removal of the buffs that make little to no sense at all in favor of a system with either no buffs and have the armor be just that - armor with different styles and aesthetics or make the piece and set bonuses something that makes sense without really stretching the idea of common sense.

It feels like the current armor sets should have been clothing sets and instead armor should be something that fits over top the clothing such as padded clothing, reinforced leather straps, metal plates, etc. The clothing would be aesthetic and provide temperature bonuses and even some logical bonuses would be fine like the old run fast sneakers or some of the armor bonuses we have now, while armor would be differentiated by simply better armor, durability, mobility, etc. This would even solve the issue of the visual disparity of clothing as you could just alter the new clothing models to add some padding, leather and metal to each outfit to show the change of armor you add over top - almost like reinforced clothing.

Anyway just some random thoughts. I won't say my ideas are even close to the best possible implementation and understand if people like the current system. For me I wish they went a slightly different route with the armor concept we have now.

I'm with you.... I really dislike the current system. When it first came out, I would swap sets depending on what I was doing: farming set while farming, mining set while mining, lumberjack set to chop trees, etc. It didn't take long before I was tired of swapping all the time. Not to mention the illogic of how wearing a different set of clothes can make me farm better.

While the new sets do look good, what ends up happening in multiplayer is everyone ends up looking the same (more or less). That rarely happened when we had the different clothing options.

I really don't like the new magic armor sets. It made sense to be scrounging for any kind of clothing I could find and creating makeshift armor from whatever was lying around. Now we have fashionable clothing that provides magical stat boosts.
