PC A17 Food / Farming

Just made a long ass post only for it to say “Security token missing”. (x3) and “Report to administrator” doesn’t work.

So I’ll keep it short; 20 days in with only 3 animals found, zombies no longer drop food at all, boiled eggs waste your bottles, fertilizer is removed, takes x10 of an item to craft a seed and Level 5 “Living of the land” only yields x5.

I’m spending 75% of my time running out of health and hunting for raw eggs and Yucca, the game is so boring and repepetive now as I can’t do anything such as building because bam I’m hungry again. Not to mention the status effects disable your perks and upgrading of skills, such as crafting iron tools.

I can, and have, but it doesn’t help out enough. I still need an actual supply of food. All of the vending machines just have drinks in them.

Have you wiped your previous save and started fresh? I've heard that happening with people who continued a save from a previous build. I literally cant eat all the food I get in playthroughs. Animals are hard to spot, maybe that's going on too. I find tons of food from POIs in cabinets , fridges, bbq grills and the like too. Traders sell a bit of food.

Not saying I don't believe you, the game can be pretty random sometimes. I generally don't have any problem finding food. I can tell you if you need food then just do one of the buried treasure missions for the trader. They are always packed with food.

It seems like on day 1, half of the things that spawn around you are animals and not zombies. I always take that opportunity to kill as many as I can because later, there tends to be a lot fewer animals around.

Also, it seems like you don't know how farming works at all. It takes four of an item to make a seed. Once you plant that seed, it never needs replanting. You just harvest it every three days. You should have no problem feeding yourself from a farm. Even without any extra harvest perks. Cornbread and Baked potatoes are easy enough to make.

20 days in and you can't find vending machines with food or traders with food or even canned food in the PoIs? Not even in the air drops? Also if food is such a struggle why not get the slow metabolism perk? You can easily make extra bottles in the forge and so that shouldn't be an issue especially if vending machines only have drinks.

Sorry but I find this hard to believe that in 20 days you only found 3 animals and have a shortage of food. Got some questions/suggestions for you:

1. Did you create a brand new world? Seems like there more animals in this update now or perhaps since I created a new world I got brand new spawns. I found 4-5 animals within the FIRST day of wandering around.

2. Did you create a shiv from the bone and use that to harvest animals? You get more back when you harvest with the 'higher-level' weapons (eg shiv, hunting knife, machete).

3. Did you do a lot of exploring? There are farms out there that have corn, potatoes and blueberries. Just harvest them or save them to convert into seeds (which I'll go into later). The farmlands are suitable for planting crops so you don't need to craft/find a hoe. In addition there are some POIs that have small gardens ready for harvest/planting.

4. Do even more exploring and check all fridges/cabinets. Check shamway stores or POIs that are related to dining. There's even one labelled Grocery! Some POIs have animals in them but beware if you can't take them on.

5. Your post implies you've already been to the desert. In A17 the whole bottom area is desert so there should be TONS of yucca to help you manage until your farms are ready to be harvested.

6. Put points into the perk to get more resources from animals.

7. There are TONS of vending machines out there. Sell items to get tokens to buy food/water. Get the perk to get better bartering prices so you get more $ for selling items. A full meal (like stew) should last you 1 day.

8. Did you put points to reduce hunger/thirst requirements? They combined hunger/thirst so that you drink/eat less often.

9. Living off the land yields x5 but that means for each crop you harvest you get 5 back, 4 of which can be used to craft another seed of the same crop. The trick is to use your harvest to create more seeds and plant more seeds. In addition once you plant a crop you no longer have to replant on that block. Using this method you'll have an overabundance of food in no time. In my last playthrough (a208) I harvested 800+ potatoes, 800+ corn, 400+ mushrooms EVERY 3 days (1 hour days). I also planted all the other crops as well getting over 400+ for each plant each harvest. I was level 4 living of the land until I reached 100 then got 5/5 for that perk. Getting masterchef 2 means you can craft vegetable stew which should last you the rest of the game.

10. Tree trunks sometimes have honey in them. I usually save them to fight off infections but they could be a source of food.

11. If you can, craft some sort of transportation since it'll make traveling much easier to find more sources of food and POIs.

12. Last resort enable/change air drops to drop more often like say every day so you get daily airdrops. They sometimes drop food. In my most recent game, most of the earlier airdrops were food. Eg. in my last airdrop I had 7 canned goods. Thanks game but a beaker would have been more useful.

That's all I can think of for now.

I’ve invested in skills to help with health, and I created a brand new save for A17. It doesn’t cost 4 to craft a seed for me, it costs 5. And I wasn’t aware that after breaking a planted item it would replant itself. I’ve only found 3 animals, which were roosters; besides dogs. And yes I use a bone shiv.

I’ve raided loads of houses, the businesses, etc. I spawned near the very bottom of the desert and so getting dirt is s long walk, finally got to a new biome and it’s just several layers of clay soil, no dirt. I don’t remember this being an issue in older versions either.

My bartering is level 3 and they have lots of other items available, however I’ve only seen food in there and vending machines twice so far. Getting reallll tired of eating Yucca. Water isn’t the problem, I have loads of that, and loads of eggs. The fact you lose a bottle every time, I think I’ll just invest in creating an egg farm and turning sand into glass jars.

Maybe the shortage of food in trader is due to the trader I’m using, I don’t know. I have loads of seeds now just can’t find dirt in these biomes. And no it’s not dirt fragments the whole biome is just clay soil, not sure if it’s just top few layers or what.

Past versions I had plenty of animals around me, I get nothing here. Not in any biomes.

Clay soil is dirt. All you need is a hoe and you can turn it into farmland that you can plant on.

Corn bread and blueberry pies are *the way* early game now. Find a forest biome town and grab all the crops. I haven't had any issues with this carrying me. Meat, I haven't seen squat, but I haven't needed it with all of the corn and blueberries.

Why is dirt still an item in A17 then? They changed stuff up too much, makes it way more confusing.
Dirt that you craft can be used to make a farm on top of your base, or in the snow, or in the desert. But yea, if you're in the forest you just need a hoe to til the ground then plant your seeds. Same as it was in A16.

Eggs and charred meat have been enough for me so far. Hard boiled eggs and Charred meat both give you 10 stam. The eggs don't drain your water like meat does so I even like them better.

I haven't had this experience yet.

Never had a shortage of meat so far.

Yet others are having difficulty getting food.

Perhaps it's what some players are focused on.

In A16 we really didn't need to focus on food.

It was everywhere and in plentiful supply.

Now in A17 if you aren't actively doing something about it [including buying perks that help] you won't do well.

I guess we all have to adapt to a slightly different play style.

I usually don't really have a problem with meat, or food at all. But even if you can't find meat, don't underestimate canned foods. I eat tons of canned food and I guess I've just been lucky but I have yet to get food poisoning even once. I actually was wondering if it was bugged and just looked at how they do food poisoning...It looks like even if an item has 5% food poisoning chance, there's still only a 1 in 5 chance to trigger the next level of the debuff without the Intrinsic Immunity perk. So it's more like a 1% chance anything bad happens.

I agree. I found an airdrop full of cans and I was so stoked. The white cans called Rations had a 0% chance of food poisoning which was nice.
