The "chicken coop" is a joke

What I mean is that it's a collection station that works exactly like the dew collector; it's not an open space for chickens where you can see them walking around, eating, and living freely with their feeders, etc.—similar to the video I showed above. Technically, it's the same thing but simpler and scaled down to a station the size of two blocks.
Gotcha.

I agree. I don't like how it looks. It’s too colorful and it looks like a little playhouse for children. It’s also very small, and it’s a shame that you can’t see the chickens inside. I was really expecting to be able to see them walking around in the coop, depending on how many chickens we have. Having several of these chicken coops would probably cause performance issues. Well, I guess that’s probably the reason.

That's a stretch. Why would you have a bunch of playhouses that aren't broken down if you're breaking down everything else? Again, it doesn't fit with anything else you build. It is out of place, regardless if you like how it looks. I'm just happy it's basically a useless workstation for me that I never have to build.
I dont think it is a stretch.... again, abstraction. I would think almost all the scrap we have is in the form of various items that we haven't broken down because we haven't needed it yet. When you need to craft something out of plastic, thats when you'd break down the items.

I'm not sure what you mean about looking out of place.... just about everything we can build looks makeshift. This is just another example. I get that you don't like it, and thats fine, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But in my opinion, this fits in with the idea of making use of everything at your disposal.

As long as I can turn it off, I don't mind it being in the game; I see it more as a joke-type setting. It would probably be best to move it to “Miscellaneous.”
I feel like the joke setting shouldn't be the default. It's too comfortable to put everything in a setting when we can just not have it because it's bad.
As for attracting a wandering horde, I’m not sure—not even one or several shots generate a wandering horde, so why would a chicken sound? It’s probably best if it alerts nearby zombies, like a “smell” effect.
I would be fine with that as well. Watching Kage848 trying and bring chickens home makes me feel like the whole mechanic is more tedium than anything else.

I don't mind the model because it shows using what's around in an apocalypse. My biggest issue is you cannot see any chickens, which is just disappointing as hell. I want to see my pets!

TFP could do this but the chickens have the same performance cost as a zombie. If they added them they would have to decrease the number of zombies in the game. You got 4 chickens in your coop and set it up near your horde base? Then you'll see only 4 zombies at any time running at you instead of 8. You put 2 coops near your horde base? Horde night will be canceled ;). (No, not really. More likely: Just like with animals they would have to reserve some performance for chickens and if that is not enough because some players will add more than one coop near their base then that player will get bad performance and tell everyone that TFP has not optimized their game.)

Maybe there could be an option in the game settings to show or hide chickens?

Could the devs create a fictional entity with a basic animation and no AI, basically just for decoration? I’m not sure, but maybe it would work. Another option would be to limit chicken coops to one per LCB or zone, and have the chickens not appear until you’re a couple of meters away—just like with the sleepers—and have only two or three chickens wandering around.

They could also disappear at night since chickens usually go into their nests at night.
I feel like the joke setting shouldn't be the default

That would probably be best.

Another solution. Though wouldn't at least half of the people who complain now also complain that this looks artificial because it obviously will loop through the same animation all the time? This is fine for a cog or wheel in a machine but not a living being I would assume

That would be chickens spawning directly in front of you? Not as bad as zombies spawning in front of you, granted. But I would guess that would garner a lot of critique as well.

I don't think it would look that bad

There will always be people who don't like it, but if sleepers work like that these days, I don't think a couple of chickens that pop up when you get close would be much of a problem.

I don't want devs wasting their time adding completely new features just to show ■■■■ chickens in a coop. If they wanna just grab the chicken prefab with its looping idle animation and plop one or two inside the coop, fine. Anything past that is just unnecessary. Seems since 2.5 happened everyone thinks if they do a bunch of whining TFP will listen to them. And of course now with 3.0, everybody think everything should just be an optional setting. TFP have to draw lines somewhere or they'll never get the other features added.

Sleepers don't work like that. The game makes every effort that sleepers are spawned in before you can see them or in your back. You can't do that with a coop except if you make it so big that the chickens can all spawn on the backside of it

Do they really have the same performance cost? That seems unlikely. Faatal has said the AI cost is not too significant on zombies, so it seems the high performance cost is related mostly to the models. Chickens really shouldn't be the same cost as far as models and even with the AI, they don't need as much either. It could be that they just stand there or walk a set path (it's a block, so a set path is easy to add if you don't let them wander everywhere).

Possibly. But first they would have to expend development time to have NPCs on a schedule appear whenever you get neat the coop. A completely new feature that about half the players can't turn on and has zero value for gameplay.
They already have things spawn and despawn on a schedule, so that's nothing new. Higher tier zombies spawn at night and despawn in the morning. It would be the same mechanic. Now, it is true that having that happen in front of you is immersion breaking and people who care about that will not like it. But that already happens with the zombies, so it's nothing new. But they could consider having the chickens go into and out of the coop instead of spawning and despawning. Same event, but an animated action using a set path instead of appearing out of nowhere or disappearing into nothing. That would require doing the animation, but the event/mechanics is already there. It would just trigger the animation instead.

I could opt-in even if I've already got an existing save and still be able to craft it?
Yes. I would recommend making a backup of your save just in case something goes wrong, but yes. Just be aware that I've seen at least one mod (it was nothing more than a POI) break in 3.1 when it worked fine in 3.0, so if you use mods, they may no longer work. I think most will work fine if they worked in 3.0, though.

I wouldn't put it by my horde base; I do a separate horde and home base, but either way, yes, I actually would take fewer zombies. Now I understand not everyone would feel that way, and it's definitely understandable.

However, I'm sure there are solutions, like having no AI models, similar to how trees are just 3D models with some movement. If I plant trees next to my horde base, do fewer zombies spawn? Limit how many chicken coops can be put in one chunk. I mean, come on, you're the dev team, not me. Someone is smart enough to figure it out.

I run a vanilla game, so no mods. Thanks!

I am not part of TFP, I am just a player like you.

Yes, trees are animated. They don't look artificial because they are still very imobile. On the other thread someone showed an example of hens sitting on their eggs in the coop. That is something that could work in my opinion. I don't think chicken running around outside would be possible with acceptable effort.
