That really just depends on your settings. With default settings, and some practice, fighting the zombies at night really isn't that much different from fighting them during the day. I'm always out doing stuff at night, right from day 1 with a wooden spear. And now that I set traders to 24 hours, I am also doing quests at night because I can actually turn them in and get new ones. So not only am I running around in towns at night, but I'm also fighting all the zombies in quests at night. But it does depend at least somewhat on your settings. Settings that make things more difficult can make nights harder than normal. But I would guess that someone who is struggling with nights and wants to sleep through them probably doesn't have the settings raised to be more difficult.
So my suggestion is to not be afraid of the dark. If you struggle with it, practice. Run around near your base at night and fight the zombies. If you run into trouble, you can easily run back to your base for protection. Or clear a POI during the day and then use that as your "base" at night, where you can run back to it for safety if you start having trouble with the enemies. But take some time to practice at night and you'll soon find that it's not really as difficult as it might seem at first. When I started this game, nights seemed extremely dangerous. Of course, back then you had bears and wolves and dire wolves (the originals, not the new ones) in the forest at night, so it was quite a bit more dangerous than it is now. But it didn't take long before I was always doing stuff at night... because of practice.
