fetch/clear

I'm worried this fetch/clear quest is bugged. It's showing the supply chest 0.3m away from me on the first floor, and the only logical place for that to be is in the floor (because the ceiling is too far away to be 0.3m). So I broke the floor in that spot...nothing.

No, not bugged. When going by altitude, it is only showing the z distance,
if there is a solid block in between you and the satchel. To test it and see it
more clearly. Get another fetch, make ladders and go to the roof directly
above it and look at the distance, either break the blocks or go inside.

It has always been like that since it was introduced. once there is open air
between you and the satchel I think that measurement is ray trace, and the first
is just position. without line of sight.

I'm not sure I'm following. I was inside the instance, up on the first floor (one up from ground), and it was showing the satchel 0.3m from where I was. The ceiling of that level was at least 4m away.

The satchel was sitting on a table in a board room one floor up.

I think he was saying that the distance can sometimes be wrong if you're on a different floor. I think I've seen that happen as well, though I haven't paid a lot of attention to it. Since it won't show the icon unless you're really close, you should always be no more than one floor from the satchel when you see that icon... either directly above or directly below if it's not on the same floor.

Still, that's something they should fix.

Exactly as Riamus was saying.

It confused me the first time I saw it. I was in a house it said I was 1.9 m away from
the satchel. which pointed to a dividing wall between a room an the hallway. So I
broke the wall, once I had no solid block between myself and the satchel, it registered
4 meters below me in a table. so i made a ladder and climbed down and got it.

It should only show one number for distance, but like I posted when on a different floor
and a solid block is blocking line of sight, the calculation is like the 2d distance to 0,0 position
when you can see it it changes to 3 dimensional distance or 0,0,0. because ray trace can rebound
off of the actual collider. Imagine like this, when you are on a different floor, it is giving a distance
to invisible beacon, sort of an x marks the spot, but it is not telling you how deep the treasure is
buried. The treasure hunt works the same way.

The way I first tested it was I strafed to the side until the distance stared to rise again, then
at the corner of the poi strafed and did it again, so I had 2 points of reference, from there I could
pretty much tell which room and floor I had to go to.

Oh, I see. So the tracker was saying that I was in the exact position, but wasn't accurate on elevation. Yeah, you're right. That's definitely an annoying thing they should fix.

Yeah, but the difference with a treasure hunt is that it gives you a circle to dig into, then you have to keep digging to get it once you get the marker. It's understood from the name "buried treasure" that you *have* to dig to it. Fetches don't imply any of that.

You are right, it isn't implied. But it is in a 3d environment. If you are on the floor
above, it is working like being on the ground in the circle, because it is below, it's
just not dirt you have to go through.

Yeah, as bdubyah showed, even if the distance ends up being inaccurate, you can still see if it's above or below your location if the compass is on. That's the best way to find it.

Compass doesn't show me direction. It shows location and distance to location. But the z is not included.
Look at the screenshot above. There is a "^" above the satchel icon. That means it's above your location. If it's below your location, it'll show a "v" under the satchel icon. If it's at the same level you're on, it won't show either. It can be hard to notice that indicator until you know what you're looking for since it kind of blends into the satchel icon, but it is there. Just note that the indicator is based on where you're standing. If you stand on something, it can show it as being below you even if it's on the same floor. I'm not sure the exact vertical distance that will change the indicator, but I *think* it's 2m based on where you are currently standing. It is not based on what floor you are on.

The compass is at the top of your screen like in that screenshot. It shows direction but doesn't show distance. Distance is a separate indicator in the main screen area. The compass is where it shows if it's above or below or not.

Thanks! You're right, I've totally never noticed that.
I thought you saw it, that is why I explained it the way I did.
But don't feel bad, there are still things, that it took me years to notice.

Fetch and Treasure History
The circle you spoke of and the numeric distance are their hyper-simplification of
treasure hunting. The original was just the blinking red icon. There were potholes,
pockmarks and fissures all over the map. All caused by treasure hunting. It could be
buried under a paved street. But many considered it too inconvenient, so it progressed
to this phase. The distance was as long as it's on the map it's fair game. Only recently
did it start changing the road to dig-able soil to make it easier.
