i'm new player, only 26 hr played.Ugh! Sounds like I'll be using a variety of new mods. Unless you're just not giving enough detail to make it sounds even remotely worthwhile. It's one thing to have to find clothing to compensate for temperature.... but they removed clothing. We could use mods for the armor to compensate for temperature, and I could be fine with that so long as I don't have to constantly swap mods when temperature changes. I'd even be fine with dropping a campfire somewhere if I'm not protected from the cold through use of clothing (again, no longer an option) or armor mods to warm up. But if carrying a torch everywhere ends up being necessary, that isn't a good thing to me. You can't carry it while using a weapon. Having to pick them up and put them down everywhere is a pain. I suppose using one as a temporary heat source once in a while like I said above with a campfire would be acceptable, but I'd rather just do a campfire. I always have stone with me. I can make one easily without extra effort. On the other hand, if I want to use a torch, I have to either use an inventory spot for it or else use 2 for the cloth and animal fat, none of which I normally carry unless I've happened to loot or scavenge it. Cloth might not be too unusual to be carrying for that reason, but I rarely have animal fat with me. So it's still an extra inventory spot compared to no extra spot for the stones to craft a campfire. And even if I didn't carry stones, you can get the stones VERY quickly pretty much anywhere on the map.
Anyhow, maybe it's just the lack of detail that makes me not like the sounds of it. We'll see how it is actually implemented. I'm fine with torches as a heat source. Being able to walk up next to ones that you find in POI to warm up is fine. I just don't see value in needing to carry them around.
If it's pitch black, you obviously have to use whatever you have available for lighting unless you don't do anything in the dark. As I said, I use 20% brightness. That makes things just slightly different shades of dark gray in interior locations without light sources. That's enough that you can't easily see what you're trying to see (loot, etc.) and can easily miss things. With that level of brightness, I'd easily choose to potentially miss things rather than bother with placing torches everywhere or having to swap back and forth to a torch just to see things temporarily. Others may be fine with that, but it has no value for me. I wait until I have a helmet light mod or a fire mod for my spear. At least one of those usually happens within a few days, sometimes even on day 1. On rare occasions, it might take longer, but I still wouldn't choose to mess with a torch. Just my preference.
If you can't state WHY it is bad so that people can understand your point of view, then people will just ignore what you say. I can say that I don't think X is good in the game, but if I don't say why, it's a meaningless statement. It's one thing to not give the "why" initially, but if people ask and you refuse to give a reason, then it's not much better than trolling and you aren't likely to see any changes made to the game to improve it for you unless someone else is willing to say why.
As has been pointed out multiple times, if you lower brightness, it will get very dark in POI. I asked you this before... have you tried lowering it to 0% to see how it looks? If that is still not dark enough, explain why so people can understand why you think the current choices aren't enough.
As far as a countdown... you already have a clock. And there's little reason to avoid the night, so why would you need an alarm?
Just go into your display settings in the game options. Look for brightness. Lower it below 50%. There isn't any risk of messing things up with that setting. It only affects brightness, and you can easily go in and change it if it's not what you want. Brightness has no real impact on game balance. Yes, if you set it really dark and you can't see enemies until they are close, the game will be more challenging. But you don't have to set it that dark unless it is what you want. And you're going to find light source options pretty quickly to compensate for even 0% brightness. Give it a try and see what you think.i'm new player, only 26 hr played.
just wrote a impressions of games.
another system are feel good.
but i wanted say those things.
i'm stupid, always fail game config, break
game balance, so I want to blightness preset now.
When I focus on the game, forgot see time.
so giving alarm and change time font color to red before night 1 hr ago(or adjustable better)good. it will make good feeling rushed.
Can you imagine any "placement system" you would use?On rare occasions, it might take longer, but I still wouldn't choose to mess with a torch. Just my preference.
GuppyCur torcheshaving flare-type throwables, with the current rock-throwing mechanic? Less bouncy than rocks, maybe even "sticky" to walls?
For me? If I can't carry it while using a weapon, it isn't worth the effort. Of course, the problem there is that I use a spear, which is two handed, so even if they allowed you to carry it with a weapon, it wouldn't be an option for me. If the game had no other sources of light and that was my only option, I'd have to use it if it's dark enough. But since I can find other sources of light and I set the brightness at 20% instead of 0% so that I can still see, even if it's hard to make things out and is easy to miss seeing things, I have no reason to use an inventory space for a torch. I limit what I carry to only what I absolutely need. Especially in the early game, when I am overburdened quickly and don't have a vehicle, or have one with limited storage. Sure, I can drop crates everywhere, but I don't like doing that unless I'm halfway across a map and choosing to quest in that area. If I'm questing from the trader near my base, I can unload every time I get a new quest, so it's not a problem as long as I have space. But that means not wanting things in inventory that I don't need. And a torch doesn't offer any benefit to me that would make me consider using a space for it.Can you imagine any "placement system" you would use?
If it "just works" to click on a wall to slap a torch on it, and picking it back up is easy - or heck, even automatic when walking away / at dawn?
Or having flare-type throwables, with the current rock-throwing mechanic? Less bouncy than rocks, maybe even "sticky" to walls?
I think you maybe haven't read what I've said about it. I play at 20% and I barely see things. I get slightly different shades of dark gray for things when there isn't any light source inside. I would never play that way for long without a light source. I do use the fire weapon mod as soon as I find it or can craft it. I also use the helmet light mod as soon as I find it or can craft it. If those weren't options, I would not play the game at 20%. And that's at 20%. I could drop it to 0% and make it even harder to see. I definitely wouldn't be playing the game without light at 0%. I just don't use torches because they use an inventory space and having to keep dropping them and picking them up is annoying to me. It isn't worth it to me. But that doesn't mean I think it's bright enough at 20% to play the game without any light sources for any length of time.you know a games night brightness needs an adjustment when you'd rather not play with a torch or flaming weapon blocking your vision. The torch I NEVER use. haven't had a need for any lighting at all for the last few big updates. That is the entire issue for me. I have zero reason to use torches aside from trying to generate heat to get witches to spawn.
Heh, I get that, but I don't really consider inventory all that sacred anymore. Most of the crap I carry home, just sit there anyway and are left behind on day 4 (new quest tier, new .. "base").I suppose if it didn't take actual inventory space (some games have their own special equipment spot for torches) and I could press a single key to drop it and pick it up, then I might consider using it. But I'd stop using it as soon as I either got the fire mod for my spear or a helmet light.
I don't care a lot about inventory later in the game once I have a decent vehicle and especially once I have a drone. At that point, inventory is a non-issue. But the first few days? When you are over-encumbered at somewhere around 2/3 of your inventory (I don't know the exact amount since I've never actually counted it out) and have no extra inventory space, or just the single row from a bicycle, it's more of an issue. I don't carry everything back because there's no room to carry everything back, but there are definitely enough different things that are valuable and will be needed at some point that I don't want to leave behind. For example, I don't need cloth until later in the game, but I will use a LOT of it later in the game. If I don't collect it as I go, I'll have to spend time trying to find a lot of it when I need it, which isn't very enjoyable to me. By carrying it back each time, even though it can be found everywhere and isn't really worth a lot, I have it when I need it. The same goes with a lot of things I'll end up needing. With such a small inventory in the first few days, each space is important. And like I said, I don't like dropping crates everywhere, even though that's an option. The torch gets dropped as soon as I have a crate to drop it into and I'll eventually toss it on my base for the challenge and just for some extra lighting until I have lights. I might even make a few extras for the base until I have lights or might use them on a horde base. I just am not interested in carrying one around with me.Heh, I get that, but I don't really consider inventory all that sacred anymore. Most of the crap I carry home, just sit there anyway and are left behind on day 4 (new quest tier, new .. "base").
That "single key" could basically be the "head light" -keybind. Wouldn't even change much.. tap once to equip, another time to slap on a wall; picking up should prolly be via "use" -key still.
Yup, been there done that; still have the temptation to. Cloth May be one of the items I actually keep, but also have no qualms of tossing it into a box somewhere on the street. Once I have a motorcycle, I'll consider gathering my junk. At that point I also have 3-4 "main" stash locations, I'm going to have to haul a lot of crap around to condense; doing the drive-by at the first two towns to grab all the DO-boxes is usually quite a small part of it.For example, I don't need cloth until later in the game, but I will use a LOT of it later in the game.
All lights sources should be finitive and require fuelI don't know if this has been mentioned before. Regarding
torches. But a few times, before Joel commented on them and
the amount of resources needed especially when used in volume as was
the tendency.
I remember that if you had a lot of them in close proximity it
was blinding yellow. I think they have been adjusted or changed to
static lighting. But then, they do still affect my Gpu. So probably still
the same and the raised heat gen was a deterrent, for over use.
A compromise could be a lantern on the hip, that runs on gas.
No popup, fullness meter. Just a sudden flickering and dimming,
needing to be refueled. Anyone not using them regularly, no prob,
but constant use would require keeping up with fuel.
The key binding @theFlu mentioned would allow you to hold what
ever you want in your hands, and still have mobile light. Then all of
the torches around the game world could be removed from the game.
Or converted to static light or light probes, for performance.
You would think the hoarder with all the "*" they have on their
"*" uniform would at least have a functioning light.
It could be placed in a space on the player doll menu to be thematic
and conveniently out of sight. Then if it has the flashlight mask, or a
variable mask it could be used as you walk through, dark places.
And yes it should make you more visible and attract attention, like
the torches don't now for sleepers. Adding an invisible ray trace like
the one on the laser pointer mod. Later mods could be added for the
color tint of the emitted light.
All lights sources should be finitive and require fuel
Based! It will require 3 high grade educations XDThe anti survival crowd won't like it.
Some things are more tedious than they are immersive. In other words the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I hated having to constantly fuel torches in ARK personally. I can understand why you would like that, but for me I feel like it's more busy-work than actually enjoying the game. All lights sources should be finitive and require fuel
