There are containers, specifically kitchen cupboards AFAIK, that can only contain a cooking recipe, not the usual "recipe with weighted chances". And those containers are practically everywhere.

Cooking and farming magazines are common, even without points in their perks. That's a good thing. It means you don't have to worry about Master Chef or Living Off the Land and can still cook and farm. I never use Master Chef, and only start to put points into LoTL mid game. Not having to put points in those while still being able to cook and farm is helpful, especially if you play solo.

Master Chef is debatable single player. It certainly saves time and fuel and helps you get to better foods FASTER (magazine weighting from skill points still makes a big difference) but you can certainly do without it.

In Multiplayer Master Chef is quite good when you're cooking for 3+ people and with multiple people sharing the load of the different specializations spending a few points is far less of a consideration. Game just works amazingly well multiplayer honestly.

It's more a matter of preference. I won't use it even with more people when I'm cooking. Saving fuel/time doesn't matter. It's very easy to get wood or coal and you're rarely in a hurry to get food cooked. You just start it cooking and leave. When it's done, it is usually going into a crate until someone needs it. Only in the very beginning of the game - a few days - is it nice to have food ready faster. That is also true for drinks. As far as the savings go... meat and vegetables are so easy to get that saving a little also doesn't matter. Even if you save a few hundred of each over the course of a game, that doesn't really matter. A farm can produce plenty. All it takes is a large enough farm for your needs. And meat practically falls into your lap without even trying.

A lot of people get hooked on the idea that saving resources and time is good without ever trying without and seeing that it really isn't a big deal.

As far as magazines for cooking go, with no points in Master Chef, I can max out cooking within a very short time without ever trying to find the magazines. You can normally get a few from every residential house you visit. And how many people care about making the highest level food anyhow? Most people stick to meat stew, vegetable stew, or hobo stew. And those are all around the middle of the magazines. The higher level stuff requires canned goods, which don't drop frequently, so you can't ever survive only on that stuff, especially with a lot of players. So you cook them if you have the stuff, but it isn't your main food. That means it doesn't matter how quickly you can cook those things.
