Is it possible to please only get updates that don't make maps obsolete? New updates make old maps unloadable cuz it says stuff changed too much. I'd love to not waste my time on a game that deletes my progress.

It is very rare for an update to break a save unless it's a major update. And there are only 2 of those remaining - 3.0 and 4.0. I've only seen a minor update break a save once that I can remember, and that was due to a save bug that had to be fixed and there wasn't a way to fix it without breaking saves.
There is plenty of time between those two major updates to play the game. And when those are getting close, if you don't want to risk being in the middle of a game when the update is released as stable, you can take a break for a short time until the update is released. It will always go to experimental first, and with major updates, that usually lasts at least 2 weeks and often a month or more, which gives you time to finish up a game before stable is released.
