When smelting items in the forge, it would be nice if rather than showing the individual smelting time of each item, it instead showed the combined time of the entire stack.

When I craft 100 iron ingots it shows me how long to fuel the smelter for all 100, so it stands to reason if I stack 3518 iron in one slot and 882 clay in the 2nd slot to smelt down that it should show the total time for each stack, right?
 
Here is a trick for you: without bellows one construction frame can smelt 100 iron. So 3518 iron take 36 construction frames.
Clay is x5 slower, so for 882 clay 45 wooden frames will do.
Bellows reduce it by a third.
 
Would be nice; another proposed solution is to just automatically turn the forge off when there's nothing to process.

But yeah, 100 seconds per wood frame works if you want to be exact; I just use logs though. 10 wood a piece, 500 secs (~8 mins) of burn time, makes for decent sized errors. As in: if I'm not smelting a lot, I don't mind the errors, if I Am smelting a lot, I'll be there to tend to it before it runs empty...
 
That is why I love OCB's Stop Fuel Waste mod. I just toss in a bunch of fuel and know it will shut off when anything is finished smelting, cooking, etc

We discussed this topic about a year ago. Everyone has their own vision of the process, so I'd better count the firewood.

To smelt a full stack you need:
6000 iron or lead - 81 boards.
6000 stones - 201 boards.
6000 sand - 298 boards.
6000 brass - 33 boards.

This is provided that you have bellows in your forge.
 
Having it stop automatically, even if that requires you installing a mod in the workstation, or having the ability to fill fuel with the push of a button that puts in just enough, or being able to split by value instead of just half... Any of those options in vanilla would be appreciated.
 
I have thought about it a few times and have always wondered why they have never implemented it into the game, I've played other games in the past that would automatically shut off your workstation once something was finished crafting or whatever the task was, I believe the only thing that does do that is the cement mixer so far.
