Anyone still trying to live on ground level?

I gave up on living on ground level. Currently, the endless zombies grunts and raspy noises at night were bothering me a bit, so I went for a very hight POI and tried to clear the Vanity Tower. I am level 36 (about that) and it was pretty doable. It's 80 meters above ground. No noises. No zombies bothering. Just used the last 3 floors, there is plenty of space. Each floor is huge. It's the best base space I have ever settled in. Had to extend a little bit the claim block range (but it's no big deal, I play single player offline).

Here's my base, this was done in creative mode in a quick throw together to give a rough idea of how my bases typically look. Yeah, I know, no imagination to the build, but it's quick and effective on bloodmoon nights plus I use it as my main base as well. During bloodmoons, my wife stays on the roof shooting and I'm on the ground clubbing the zombies.

Yup, one of the top contenders for your apocalypse housing needs, absolutely :) Esp with a gyro, hauling goodies up stairs/ladders is a bit of drag early on ... :)

Not bad, not bad. Given the elevated front door, I assume the floor inside is a layer of solid blocks above ground level? That might actually help with the one-gap situation that prompted this post. Used to build like that to avoid undermining by doggos etc, but haven't needed to lately. Usually I've had a dirt floor until dug out and replaced for aesthetics. Might have to test that.

You guys built bases?

I just put my sleeping bag down so, when I die, I return there and wait out the horde.
Always. First, I enjoy building bases. Second, I have no intention of dying on horde night... and I'm not usually going to survive if I try fighting on the street like some people do.

I've made it so far... killed hundreds but have always fallen, so far. I'll be perched up somewhere and one of the fat cops spews acid from 50 yards away and concusses me....

You'll get there. It helps when you can play with someone who already knows the game and can give you tips as you play, or just so you can see how they do things. But even solo, it's just a matter of experience. The more you play, the more you learn about how things work and how to do things. There are many options for a good horde base, either one you build from scratch, or a POI you take over and modify.

For cops, if you have something like bars set up around your standing place and you're not standing right at the bars, you won't get hit by the cops and can still see through and shoot through the bars. But you can also be in the open on a roof and just keep a close eye out for cops so you can shoot them before they can attack you (or dodge if they do shoot that goo at you). Their attack isn't heat seeking, so as soon as you see the green coming at you, step sideways 1-2 blocks and it'll miss you. The same for the vultures that shoot that stuff at you.
