PC V2.0 Storms Brewing Dev Diary

Yeah, I get the logic on the storm doing damage, I just don't think it's all that fun atm because there's no real interaction. If it damaged blocks you would be running around repairing stuff, or if it summoned more zombies you would be rushing to fight for your life etc. Atm though, it's just a kind of "stand AFK in the base and wait for it to pass" kind of thing.

Maybe my issue is I've never had one hit when I'm out and about, they basically always just hit when I first enter a biome and you go "ah, well I guess I'll go back over the biome line and wait afk until it's done" since I didn't have a badge yet, or they hit when I'm in the base and you go "ah, well guess I'll organize boxes and stuff for a couple of hours until it's done"

There's not much player agency since you can't mitigate the damage or even interact with the storm in any way. I think it would be neat if they were each different and could hit different biomes.

Like a sudden blizzard in the desert would have tons of Frostclaws barreling at you, or firestorm sweeping through the snow would light you on fire if you are in it and have flaming burnt zombies following the storm

if it summoned more zombies you would be rushing to fight for your life et
I think this would be the best case. Storm breaking blocks would just decay pois and if they don't get damaged then people would just live in pois.

Having a storm role out being a mini horde night would be great

Imagine you scraping in some electricity plant then a storm appears then you get 1 zombie, then 3, 7, and then whatever your bloodmoon setting is as your fighting not only the storm but the zombies trying to get you.

Granted imo (I know it's like assh0les, everyone has one but bla bla bla) and I'll post on pimp dreams

There should be 3 storms types
Damage storm's
Blood storms/blood fog
Both

Can you explain how hot/cold was NOT a boring implementation, in comparison to storms? With hot/cold it was "wear the right clothes or get debuffs". That's pretty much it, in your own words ;-).

Also it seems with the storms there are more options available (most of them the same as you could use with hot/cold): Get into a POI, or build a hut or understand, or use healing potions and weather it out, or flee to another biome.
Also there is the new thing now that zombies run faster when there is a storm!!! That is certainly something new.

Eventually I hope we get a few drinks and candies (EDIT: and weapon mods like Sapeint6 suggested) that protect **partly** from storms. And there could be more: Random chance for zombies to freeze in a snow storm, random chance for them to get picked up and thrown around in a storm. Hot/cold doesn't seem to provide possibilities like this
In alpha 17 and below weather was kind of interesting. Especially when you went into the dessert or the snow. You’d burn your hunger and hydration really fast as well as get slowed down from “heat stroke” or the cold and get debuffed so your attributes were lowered. It added a sense of urgency to get well equipped to survive in whichever biome you were in. Also made well insulated a must have.

Then in alpha 18-21 weather was basically meaningless. I’m not saying the old system was perfect but I really think there was something there and if the fun pimps worked it a bit more then they could have blended it with the new storms and biome progression.

I liked how darkness falls did it where you had to accuire a hazmat suit or the hazmat mods to be able to live in the wasteland and I think something similar could have been implemented. At least temporary clothing that could let you roam the biomes before you got your badge or the better flavored version: a unique item like a hood or jacket or a mask that lets you exist in them permanently. And you could still have the protection recharge overtime too.

The current system feels like a placeholder/ infantile state. I love the storms. I love the idea of biome progression. But it feels a little wonky at the moment and removing clothing and temperature effects really don’t help that.

Thanks. But I think the original drop rate (before the patch) was appropriate. Because the contents of the bags are also strong.

They’re strong… but also they got nerfed/ changed in 2.0. It seems they changed the loot pool for them because you get more like random junk like mechanical parts and nails which seem to replace the ammo portion of the loot bag which… yeah nah for as rare as they are it can feel underwhelming to get 5 nails, some mechanical parts and a can of food. I think 5 percent was okay… 4 percent might be better? but the old drop rate felt way too low.

Really super duper important question. Will we ever get 64 zombie hordes back? Or at least some way to increase their size again? I feel like it’s hardcoded into the game now no matter what I change in the gamestagexml’s or the server config, hordes are always capped at like 30 zombies and don’t last all night not even close.

I still have a copy of 1.1 saved because of this.

Also just change the settings. Don’t have it say 64 zombies if that’s not what it is. Or just have a performance warning like how graphics settings do.

I started playing in alpha 10 and it’s actually insane that it supported 64 zombie hordes then. And that’s why I fell in love with the game in the first place.

Could be because they might release it tomorrow and surprise everyone.
This is just fantasy, but would be nice for our fellow console players (and people who play Stable builds only).
It could be a nice surprise but I'm not holding my breath. Would be sick af I would can all My plans

Were those stumps with honey in them? Would make sense!
It could be either or both.

I see the reasoning. Outside of a structure and during a storm I think that makes sense. Once you get inside a structure, then I don't see that reasoning holding up. It feels absurd to be standing in a structure next to a burning campfire, and getting no benefit from it, snow storm or not.

I'm with you on the block damage.
How would the campfire benefit you from temperature when temperature does nothing?

Also found this out: in Line biome configuration it orders the biomes from least percentage to greatest percentage. I hate my snow biome touching my desert so I ordered them Snow, Pine forest, burnt forest, desert, wasteland.

Now that's some super useful info! I don't like desert and snow bordering each other either. Gonna have to try that out later!

Tbf it was not removed. The code is still there, but they have to redo it to make it work.

I'm not sure how much of the old system is merely disabled -- still there, under the hood -- or just gone now. I've been told that the wetness and wind code was completely gutted. Haven't looked myself so I don't know. But In practical terms it doesn't really matter. Those features have been deprecated and no longer affect gameplay.

Regardless, modders have already recreated those features for v2.0. So, you know, whatever. It is what it is. Shame that stuff was removed from vanilla, but I don't play unmodded anyway.

Supposedly one of the devs posted on Discord that they want to reimplement temperature at some point in the future. So maybe that'll happen. 🤷‍♂️

They said that here as well.

I never paid attention to this before but because of my new storm deaths can someone answer, please.
If you are not playing dead is dead, and die 4 times in a row in the burnt wilderness, you get the gamestage
drop. once you have gotten the red out of the ledger does it go back to what it was or do you have to progress
1 by 1 again?

Crossing my fingers that we will see it again one day in vanilla 🤞

How would the campfire benefit you from temperature when temperature does nothing?

Right now if you don't have a badge for the snow biome, there's a timer running and when it expires you start taking damage.

If you were in shelter standing near a lit campfire, the timer would pause regardless of if there was a storm.

If you were outside near a lit campfire and there was no storm, then pause the timer.
If you were outside near a lit campfire and there was a storm, then turn off the campfire. :)
