Would be way more immersive crafting mask “consumables” that are basically the same thing, but use up say, cloth and coal. I saw somewhere suggested a new high tier item, gas mask that makes you immune to smoke/radiation, and making the smoke permanent damage in biomes where you will need a mask
 
Are you suggesting that instead of traders giving you a biome badge, they give you a mod that you have to wear on your gear?

Yeah, I really want to see something like this. I don't like the "do these easy tasks and you are now immune". I'd much rather a system where you need some kind of portable protection that depletes and a more permanent form of protection that you can install in your base to make your base safe.
 
I don't mind the notion of acclimation and I don't mind doing a series of achievements to earn that acclimation. The visuals (badge, smoothies) aren't great. If smoothies were something like a specially treated rag/mask and the badge said something about acclimation, I'd have no criticism.

Indeed, all of those could probably be changed via a modlet. I mean, changing the recipes is easy. Changing the art assets is possible.

But in terms of game play, what they've got is fun. I don't know that I'd change it by much. I might make the total acclimation time longer, but I can be too much of a realist and real acclimation can take two weeks. I'm not sure anyone, realistically, would acclimate to a toxic environment like the Wasteland might be considered.
 
The only way I'd support actual gear is if I wasn't forced to swap it every time I entered a different biome. Talk about tedium. The way it is implemented, while a little silly, is nice because once I earn it, it covers the current and all lower biomes. No switching required.
 
It could change in the future. I know the devs had to rush a bit with certain aspects of the update. For me they are cool, but that's about it. I neither love or hate them. They are simply just there in the game.
 
I mean these are all things we already do, we just are forced to do it in a certain place. If this isn´t just a placeholder system, this is just lazy. No fun in it, no challenge. Nothing, no creativity at all. It´s simply just annoying and boring.

Was really hoping for something way more substantial. There is so many different ways this could be made really interesting instead of just working trough a list. Really hope this is just a place holder.
 
I wondered if I could come up with a better idea in 5 minutes. Here's what I got.


Ok, smoothies. Not a completely stupid idea.

For burnt biome, make smoothies with mushrooms that have a cough suppressing action. None of that coal or grass nonsense.

For desert, yucca juice smoothies. Just yucca from the desert, snow from snow area (or wrench ice boxes). A cooling drink, just like yucca juice worked in old versions. Seriously? Drinking petroleum products will protect us from heat? Maybe because we're dead.

For snow, coffee. Worked before, but now we're drinking blueberry slushies?

Haven't been to wasteland yet, so skip that for a minute.


What instead of badges? Could still just be a biome specific mod slot, with a special piece of crafted gear.

For the desert, well, we have to kill plague spitters. Maybe we make a duster "badge" from their heat resistant hide?

Snow area is easy. That blue fur from the snow monkees has excellent insulation properties. Harvest 10 or 20 of those and make a puffy "badge". Skip all the busywork.

I didn't have an idea for burnt biome, and haven't been to wasteland, but my 5 minutes are up.

I like that there are now hazards to the biomes, but this badge implementation...??? I'm hoping modders will come up with something to replace the nonsense we got.

The idea is fun but poorly implimented, so its not fun. IMHO, they should have linked biome acclimation to the infection mechanic and not the challenge mechanic. Let's have time dependent biome debuffs, with temporary immunity through candy or smoothies mitigating the effects. Then impliment a book series, armor mods, and/or magazine gating for permanent acclimation.

I like the badge system. It's an extra challenge that I like better than just crafting something new.

Not so sure about the storms.

Buy, craft, find, but -- yes -- gear. How is it that the Nomad set doesn't protect you already? You're not going to become "acclimated" to an irradiated zone or made immune to smoke inhalation in real life. I realize this a video game, but it would be nice if something about it made sense.

I also realize they're not going to rework the smoothie/badge system at this late date. So, I'll just turn it off and thank TFP for the option to turn it off while lamenting the lost opportunity for both them and us.
