If you're mining during the storm can you put a block over the hole and keep on digging while waiting for the storm to end?

Picked up a treasure quest that takes me to the snow biome. once I have enough smoothies I'm going to give it a try but if I get some weather, can't I hunker down in my hole?

Anything that is covered is safe from storms, though if you are too close to an opening, you might get hit by it. Either plug the hole or dig sideways a little ways. Confirmed by faatal.
