I came here to say exactly this.
Plus put a roof over the Zs to make them crawl and head shots line themselves up. 1 bullet through 4 zombies = very ammo efficient.
Easy horde night. The Zs have never once reached me.
But it's now (1.0) difficult to put all the skill points into sniper...
We used to press <Y> / <triangle> once to activate the item. Then we could press what we wanted to do. Now we have to keep holding <Y> for unexplainable reasons.

The latest release (b325) really improved the fire and shock effects of melee weapons (or maybe I just noticed then). It's stunning. And my frame rate didn't suffer for it.
But yeah, you have a valid point about realism. That's not what makes a game fun.
For console users this sucks. I don't know if they will provide useful feedback since they haven't experienced a better way.
For PC users this is not a problem. I use a PS5 controller and have reverted the Dpad to near old behavior, while keeping last-item swap. Also I have all 10 backpack...
I agree strongly with most of your points. And want to add/emphasize:
why add "hold Y" to do something that doesn't benefit from the extra complication?
why is d-pad-left not 'light' like it is in vehicles? keep it consistent.
hold d-pad could be very useful for things that are not...
On one of my games the first two 'opening trade routes' brought me to the exact same trader. So the first three traders were all the same! I understand how this could happen with RNG, but I don't think it should happen.
With a generated map I think

It seems this way to me too. I just unlocked crafting an iron pick axe and iron spear. I crafted both and when I saw the stats immediately threw them in the forge to be smelted. So from this I'm expecting to never craft lvl 1-3 of higher tiered items. Also my stone items only had a mod or two in...
