I had a lot of good loot on my first day as well. cooking pot, grates, tons of ammo, 2 mining helmets, weps. No food, but plenty of water. I got 2 batteries and 2 wheels also. As far as nest go, i got tons on mine and i loot almost everyone i see.

My pal and i just built our base in a snow biome and it looks like the campfire does not provide heat. I'm not sure if it got reduced or removed altogether or a bug. I tested my temp by standing right next to it and then about 7 blocks away and there was no change in temp.
